Brilliant!

I absolutely love this book. I bought it for the reason that it took me back to when I was a boy in England and all the cars that were available then. This book is wonderfully laid out and the photos are amazing. I would recommend this book even if you are not a car fanatic.

What a great book this is

This is an extensive detailed and accurate catalogue of British cars. A comprehensive review of all cars produced in this period it is a necessity for any serious student or collector. It is a reference book. I thought I was well informed but there are cars here that I had never heard of. There are no color photos or other trivial distractions...it's all black and white and facts. Lots of red meat.

About the Author
Before entering academia, Professor McDowell spent over two decades in commercial television, including station management positions in promotion, programming, and creative services. After earning his doctorate in from the University of Florida, and teaching for several years at Southern Illinois University, he joined the faculty of the School of Communication at the University of Miami in 2001. In addition to teaching various media management courses, Professor McDowell has published media branding studies in several academic publications including The Journal of Media Economics, and the International Journal on Media Management. A nationally known consultant, he also has authored two books published by the National Association of Broadcasters and Focal Press Branding TV: Principles and Practices (with Alan Batten) and Troubleshooting Audience Research.
Alan Batten graduated from the University of Maryland (College Park) and undertook postgraduate work at Boston University's School of Public Communications. He has been active in the broadcast industry since 1971 where he had the opportunity to lead the marketing efforts of several stations affiliated with NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX and PBS. Along the way, he served as President of the Broadcast Promotion and Marketing Executives (now known as PROMAX). He has received countless industry awards and presented numerous international lectures on various aspects of broadcast marketing. In 1991, he founded ABCommunications to provide consulting services for marketing challenges. ABCommunications counts as clients such industry giants as Sinclair Broadcast Group, Universal Pictures, ACT III Broadcasting, and Raycom Sports. A writer at heart, he has written several motion picture and television scripts and enjoys producing radio commercials.

Awesome Book! Has really helped me with my Automation Engineering Internship. Dedicated chapters on Factory Talk would be really cool for future editions. Also more focus on RSLogix5000 and expanded sections on Function Block Diagrams and AOI's would be nice. Overall though, it really gave me a leg up!

Born in Mexico City in 1949, Daniel Cat�n was, until his untimely death on April 8, 2011, one of the foremost composers in contemporary opera (La Hija de Rappacini (Rappaccini's Daughter), Florencia en el Amazonas, loosely based on Gabriel Garc�a Marquez's Love in the Time of Cholera, and Salsipuedes. Speaking of his fourth opera, Il Postino, the composer recalled, "I realized, from the very first time I saw the film, that it was a suitable theme for an opera. It deals with Art and Love: the foundations upon which we build our lives. Love is what makes us human. Art is our most sophisticated tool for achieving that humanity. And opera is one of the most complete art forms ever imagined, for it includes music and poetry."

Based on the Academy Award-winning 1994 Italian film that became a surprise hit with audiences around the world, and also on the 1985 novel Ardiente Paciencia by Antonio Sk�rmeta, Il Postino tells the story of a shy young postman Mario Puoppolo (tenor Charles Castronovo) in a tiny Italian fishing village, who discovers the courage to pursue his dreams through his daily deliveries to his only customer, the esteemed Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, played by Placido Domingo. Mario falls in love with a caf� waitress Beatrice Russo (Amanda Squitieri) and wins her heart by using the poetic language (explained in a fine duet for Domino and Castronovo -`Metaphors').

Other performers include soprano Cristina Gallardo-Dom�s as the poet's wife Matilde Neruda, baritone Vladimir Chernov as the postmaster Giorgio and mezzo-soprano Nancy Fabiola Herrera as Donna Rosa, Beatrice's aunt. Grant Gershon conducts the LA Opera Orchestra, Ron Daniels directs, the sets and costumes are by Riccardo Hernandez, and the imaginative lighting and projections are the work of Jennifer Tipton and Philip Bussman.

Though the opera likely will not find a permanent place in the opera repertoires around the world, the piece is accessible, tender, the characters are well drawn and the realization of the film by Michael Radford. Domingo is especially fine as Pablo Neruda, but the real finds of the opera is Charles Castronovo, a superb young tenor, and Amanda Squitieri, a soprano whose beautiful stage presence is matched by a clear and passionate voice. Beautiful and mesmerizing....

I had the great pleasure of seeing the world premiere broadcast of this opera on PBS, in Seattle. The late, great Daniel Catan succeeds in transferring the emotion, passion and sentiment so well depicted in the film version of Il Postino (The Postman), which tells the fictionalized account of a blossoming friendship between Mario, a postman, and Pablo Neruda, the legendary Chilean poet and visionary. The magnitude of Neruda's powerful words are well-depicted, here, and I really recommend you reading through this libretto. I eagerly await the DVD release of this opera. Bravi!

12 DAYS AND I ALREADY SEE A DIFFERENCE

I am in my upper 60s, and except for walking a lot, I am exercise averse. Never enjoyed exercise. Never actually felt better after exercise. To the extent I have exercised it was to achieve a goal, e.g., getting in shape to go on a kayaking trip. Well, you see I don't think of kayaking as exercising, I think of it as getting into places I could not otherwise go. So, I am not in great shape but I am thin. I give you this background information only to help you determine if this is a good book for you. There are many levels of exercises in this book and many different exercises at each level. You can choose between equipment free exercises and some minimal equipment exercises, e.g., using a balance ball. I started at the very lowest level with the lowest intensity and without any equipment. I did not expect much. The book told me not to expect too much too soon. But I knew I needed to strengthen my core and whatever I tried before was too hard and/or painful, e.g., pilates. No level of pilates seemed doable given my generally weak core. Mostly, my pot belly, in spite of the fact that I am thin, spoke to me and said I had to do something. I found this book quite by accident. The author's book on stretching for 50+ was advertised in my Tufts Nutrition Newsletter and I have found the books they advertise/recommend to be very helpful. Anyway to cut to the chase. I went out to do an hour's worth of yard clean up this weekend, which generally involves quite a bit of heavy lifting and this weekend was no exception. I expected to be in pain the next day as usual. I was not in the least bit of pain the next day. None. I can only attribute that to 12 days with this book using the lowest level, lowest intensity of exercise. Nothing else has changed. I also feel that I can carry significantly more weight. In addition I do not hate doing the exercises. I am very happy with this book.

Core Strength for 50+

In my 70th year I greatly appreciate Dr. Knopf's book, Core Strength for 50+. The biologically sound principles discussed and illustrated in exercise postures in the book are precisely what I have used to cure seriously painful low back issues. To understand the core muscle system read the excellent discussion of several aspects of the core in the Overview section.
This book is not about body building or pumping iron. It's about basic healthy strength to carry out one's daily life with enjoyment and quality. And anyone can find in Dr. Knopf's book simple exercises that can be done at home if so desired.
I have read and applied several of this author's books to my continuing benefit. In many ways they have helped me feel under "50+". And I find this one to perhaps be the most essential of all and excellently published by Ulysses Press.

+1 star - lay flat binding. It might seem like something silly to rave about, but when you are trying out a new exercise, you want this binding format

Waaaayyyy too many typos

Hosford knows his stuff and presents the concepts clearly and concisely, assuming the reader has basic background knowledge in materials science and metallurgy. Additionally, the miscellany presented at the end of each chapter provide an interesting historical perspective. However, the real issue is with the phenomenal amount of typos in this edition. A friend of mine has the first edition and noticed mistakes that were in the second edition but not in the first! Spelling issues are one thing, but mathematical mistakes (and not just one or two, it happens multiple times in each chapter) in worked examples are extremely unhelpful to students. Further, the equations in examples are presented inline with the text. This saves space, but it makes the examples quite difficult to follow.

All in all, this text is okay for presenting the general concepts, but don't intend to rely on it for the quantitative aspects of metallurgy. There has got to be a better physical metallurgy text out there.
