Bernie Pellerite has enjoyed a 35 year archery career, having been a pro staff advisor and staff shooter, operated his own pro shop and indoor lanes, and won over 75 tournaments and titles in 3-D, indoor target and field shooting. He is also a leading technical writer and archery analyst, published in several U.S. magazines and 7 other countries. Bernie has become an internationally recognized authority on the causes and cures for over 40 shooting form flaws and countless mental maladies as well. Will improve anyones archery - add to your book shelf.

The author Bernie Pellerite is an acclaimed archery instructor who has himself won multiple state championship titles and has coached thousands of other winners. He has a background in psychology that he applies to his teaching methods. Pellerite has also produced dozens of professional archery instruction videos and is on staff for three magazines. He is also the inventor of several training aids as well as other archer products such as trigger releases.
"Idiot Proof Archery" is an archery instructional book based on getting the archer to stop over thinking the shot; thus being able to have repeatable accuracy. He states that "you don't have to do it my way...just the same way" to get his point across about learning muscle memory for the complete shot. He breaks the shot down to seven principals to help explain exactly what should be going on at that particular moment. He then takes his seven principals and divides them further to 12 steps of a firing sequence which he says you could add more if you like as long as you incorporate all of the seven principals.
Pellerite has put together a treasure trove of knowledge based on years of experience coaching others and teaching others to coach. He goes into great detail to not only tell you what is right with your form but what is wrong. He gives detailed instruction on how to correct your mistakes. There are long sections devoted to "does and don'ts" to help you improve. His methods are undeniably effective or he would not have been able to continue teaching his traveling classes the way he has over the years. People would have stopped going a long time ago if his methods were not effective. He covers bow and arrow tuning slightly but focuses on how not to let that bother you mentally. He has many wonderful drills to help develop the muscle memory to produce repeatable accuracy under stress and pressure.
Everyone looking to improve on his or her archery skills, whether it is for hunting or competition, will benefit from this book. The main drawback to the instruction is the author himself. Pellerite states in the preface that you can't get your money back so you might as well read it. Then he goes on for half of every page explaining why you should believe him. It is as if a scriptwriter for an infomercial was writing and not a brilliant instructor. The problem is that as your read you want to skip through all of that and just get to the meat of the plan. Readers of this book were most likely referred to it by another archer and were ready to believe in Pellerite based on his reputation as the best coach in the United States. He should have at least included a condensed version down to one chapter for those who are willing to trust and try his methods. The book became ponderous to read despite how desperately I wanted the knowledge contained within. To recap, this is an extraordinary work for the 99% of us who aren't focused like Tiger Woods. It will certainly help anyone willing to practice. It requires some dedication to get past all of the rhetoric but it is well worth the effort.

Great Book

Idiot Proof Archery-How to Shoot Like a Pro--Step By Step by Bernie Pellerite, is a "great" book in my opinion. It has opened by eyes, for improving my shooting, to a much higher level. Bernie's personality (to me) is very refreshing and it's obvious why he's such an incredible instructor with the massive success (he has had) with his students. I've been an archer for over twenty years (I'm a Hunter, not a Target Shooter) and this book has reconnected me to the basics of form, and the mental part of shooting, like no other book that I've read (and I read a lot). In my opinion, you can't go wrong buying this book; I'm going to invest in some of his DVDs also.

It's OK

I bought this book looking for tips to help me overcome a plateau in my improvement. I found a few. The author is a little boastful for my taste and sometimes the book reads like an ad for his many products. But if you can get past all that, there is some good information there. I particularly liked the section on common problems and their sympoms. I also learned about some of the different types of competition and scoring. As an advanced beginner I did find this book helpful and I will keep it around for future reference.
