Great reference for any RVer

WE utilize this reference quite a bit during our RV travels. Having traveled extensively in our RV east of the Mississippi we are now starting our westward ventures and the latest Good Sam Guide is very much needed.

Better Guides out there than this - not as good as in the past.

Good Sam seems to be losing place in the campground guide market. I purchased this, based on prior experience with Good Sam Travel Guides, and was disappointed in the lack of information available. There are many other travel guides out there better than this, and cheaper (look at AAA, for instance, especially if you are members). I am using the AAA guides and the Good Sam has become a doorstop. If you only have the Good Sam guide, you'd be OK, and my reason for 3 star and not lower.

He visits the forest's mad scientist, an owl who equips him with travel directions and an invisibility potion that enables him to pass unseen across the U.S. border and on to New York, where his search takes him through the city's landmarks. At last, in a seedy alley, he locates his darling's captors, and after sharing the potion, the two invisible animals slip away. Haseley's far-fetched tale doesn't maintain a smooth momentum through the journey from forest to an owl's laboratory to the booming city. But Kellogg's delightful pencil-and-paint illustrations of the see-through moose pull the story's elements together. This is a fun kid's book. We've enjoyed many Steven Kellogg books, but we hadn't seen this one. It's always fun to find funny details that are hidden in the drawings.

Canadian Invisible Animal Story

A moose suffered a devastating accident of being struck by a tree when his antlers were forming resulting in them now being shaped like question marks. Like all the male moose in the area he wants to mate with the most beautiful female moose in all of Canada. Since his horns are deformed, not only does he constantly receive ridicule from the other animals with taunts such as "You want to ask me something?", but he also cannot display that he is the worthy moose to breed with her by fighting and smashing antlers together the way the other males of his species do. For a long while this moose has just spied on her from afar, and over time rationalises to himself that he is not interested in her due to her beauty but instead the goodness inside her (she releases other animals from traps etc). One day (the first day of winter) the other males are far enough away so he decides he has nothing to loose and will try that pick up line on her and see what happens but her smile throws him and he can only utter a stupid line of "Nice Weather". Before he can pull himself mentally together and use the pick up line a tremendous noise shatters the moment. A trapper on a huge machine that knocks down trees in its way emerges, sees the female moose, captures her and drives off. The shy moose reads the words New York City on the number plate and sets off to find the wise old owl to tell him what it means.

He learns of the city of New York across the border but is warned he will be shot and killed long before reaching the city and even if he can somehow make it there alive he will not be able to wander the streets searching for the female moose as it'll be down to animal control for him. Luckily however the owl has also invented an invisibility potion so the moose decides he will go. During his search the moose is able to learn much about humans such as their desire to eat moose (chocolate mousse). When he eventually finds the beautiful female moose the only way they can escape comes with the ultimate question. Does he really not care about her looks or was being interested in her due to her being a good moose inside all just a lie in his head?

I like how the story never gives these moose names making it more authentic as obviously moose wouldn't give each other names in the real world. Although it does give the owl one. It's an interesting story that also pays homage to H F Saint's Memoirs of an Invisible Man and the Chevy Chase 80's film of that book with the moose at one stage dressing in the bandages, sunglasses and a robe.

If you like invisible animal stories also check out Mem Fox's classic Possum Magic. Selby's Shemozzle is another invisible animal story this time with a dog.

If you want good fiction stories about being invisible, invisible men (or kids) the best two novels are Memoirs of an Invisible Man by H. F. Saint and Smoke by Donald E Westlake. These two books are adult fiction and maybe a bit above the reading level of some kids.

If junior fiction is all your looking for then the best of this genre are My Best Friend Is Invisible (Goosebumps) by R. L. Stine, You Are Invisible: CYOA #48 by Susan Saunders, The Invisible Day by Marthe Jocelyn, Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich by Adam Rex, you can even get an illustrated version of H.G. Wells 1897 classic The Invisible Man (Great Illustrated Classics).

My kids love this book

A shy little boy moose is in love with a sweet girl moose. Can he overcome his shyness when his girl is kidnapped by an evil man? He talks to his super smart friend, Owl. Owl provides the perfect way for a very large moose to rescue his lady friend. Moose will become invisible.

The illustrations are precious. This book has quickly become a family favorite that we read often. The story is sweet and sends a message of never giving up and overcoming odds for love.

1Corninthians 13 talks about 'the greatest of these is love' when speaking of faith hope and love. So it makes sense to have a daily devotional on love. It def. kept me on my toes, challenging me daily to walk in love!

A great devotional

This book changed my life. I thought I knew about the love of God, but this book really makes it practical for both receiving from God and giving to others. I love how the Copeland's defend God's honor from the many misconceptions that have crept into organized religion over the centuries. You will really gain a new perspective of God's love and our responsibility from reading this book daily. I marked up my copy as I went through it last year with notes and scripture notations. This is my second year through it and I really enjoy seeing the notes and comments I made last year.

Waugh, professor and administrator at the University of Connecticut for 40 years, and an expert on the subject of sundials and their curious history, presents, on the one hand, a rigorous appraisal of the science of sundials, including mathematical treatment and an explanation of the pertinent astronomical background; on the other hand, he presents simple and non-technical treatments such that several of the dials can be built by children!
The subject matter is arranged in 19 chapters, each covering a different aspect of dialing science. All the common types of dials are covered, but the reader can also learn about analemmatic dials, polar dials, equatorial dials, portable dials, memorial dials, armillary spheres, reflected ceiling dials, cross dials, and old-fashioned noon marks. There are also sections on dial furniture, mottoes, the actual layout out of a dial, the equation of time, finding time in other cities, how to find the meridian, how to find time by moonlight — even how to estimate time from the length of one's own shadow! Directions are given for designing dials for any part of the country, or any place in the world. The author has designed many dials, and his text is filled with helpful hints based on his own personal experience. There are over 100 illustrations, charts, and tables, followed by an appendix which is filled with material which reduces or eliminates the need for calculation on the part of the reader.

Not Much On Theory. More of a "How To"

A pretty good introduction to sundials but more of a "How To" book. A little too light on theory considering that it touts "theory" in the title. Not much discussion about the way the Sun moves, the Equation of Time and what causes it, the changes in the Sun's declination and how it effects your sundial; the difference between clock time and solar time, and so on. It is sort of there in bits and pieces as he discusses how to lay out various dials, but no comprehensive overview is offered and any explanations offered are cursory.
If you already know enough about that stuff to read a sundial properly and you just want to know how to make a sundial, or set up that sundial you just bought, or you don't really care that much about studying the theory, you will be fine with this book.
If you really want to dig into the theory, the math, and the design; or if you want to understand how an unusual sundial you have come across in real life or the internet actually works; or if you want to understand what all those "extra" lines on a complex sundial do and how to read them; or you want to design an unusual dial of your own, this book is not going to be much help.

For the dial-builder

No other book, as far as I know, gives such clear detail about making your own sundials. That word seems so narrow; Waugh covers much more of solar time-telling than just dials. One thing that amazes me is his passion. He writes with clear pride about his own sundials, good to within (he says) ten seconds!
This book covers graphical or analytic techniques for laying out sundials on just about any surface that doesn't move, horizontal, vertical (facing any direction), slanted, or even the ceiling. He also discusses the movable kind, like a "shepherd's dial". It has nothing inherently to do with sheep, but can be used anywhere, even without knowing true north.
The historian may be disappointed. This is not a catalogue of sundials through the ages, although bits of history are scattered throughout. In one sense, though, this is a view into the time of its writing (1973). A modern reader, with access to modern calculators and computers, will be amused if not puzzled by some of tricks used to make hand computation more feasible. I don't know anyone any more who multiplies by adding logs, and the circumlocutions around negative logarithms look positively quaint. The only real flaw in this book is its systematic omission of half the world: the southern hemispehere. It wouldn't have been so hard to add just a paragraph or two about sundials that work "backwards".
Although this book celebrates the craft and art that can go into a sundial, its real value is technical. This book gives the essential methods for the functional side of a solar time-piece; bring your own artistry.

A solid, lucid and practical book on dialing

There are many spreadsheets available to the potential dial-maker, enabling him or her to quickly lay out lines for all sorts of dial configurations and easily add the most complex furniture to any face.

However, such an approach is a sort of "black-box" approach and doesn't connect the maker to the underlying principles of dialing. Waugh's book has detailed explanations and examples of graphical and mathematical techniques - if you use either you will understand dial-making.

This book appears to be based roughly on Mayall & Mayall. Their germinal book was a standard for many decades but is not as clear an Waugh's.

Sundials are attractive additions to any property and needn't look like the abominations sold on-line or in garden supply shops. This book provides the key to making some wonderful dials and even today, some 35 years after it was written it competes well with the computerized dial layout software.

Dialing is a gentle art and deserves personal interaction of the type this book enables.

Wow. Got this outstanding book as a gift for a grandson about to turn 13. I may just keep it for myself! Excellent photographs of cars that fascinate are complemented by equally good narratives about the vehicles. An excellent value.

Great book, disgusting title.

My 1.5 year old daughter loves cars and loves this book. We keep flipping through pages and looking at all the awesome cars. Thankfully she is not at the age yet where she can read and get the message that somehow this book is not meant for her.

If you haven't seen the video of the "Like a girl" campaign you should. [...] Girls start out equal. Over the years they grow up, the imbibe the message that is bombarded at them from society via all angles that somehow girls are weaker and cannot have interests in things like "car" which is obviously a boy thing. Due to such messages, we have very low number of women in STEM professions like engineering. This book's title directly feeds into such stereotypes that impact our future generations.

Don't do this author Martin Roach and publisher Harper Collins. Don't.

Philip R. Olds, Ph.D., CPA: Dr. Olds is Professor of Accounting at Virginia Commonwealth University, and received his Ph.D. from Georgia State University.

Christopher T. Edmonds is an Assistant Professor of Accounting at the University of Alabama
at Birmingham (UAB). His focus is on new teaching pedagogies such as “flipping the
classroom,” competency learning, and online education. In his classes, students watch
lectures at home and come to class to work with others and practice skills. Although early in
his career, Dr. Edmonds has received multiple teaching awards and published several articles
in the area of accounting education. He has written articles that appeared in Issues in
Accounting Education , Advances in Accounting Education , AIS Educators Journal , and
Advances in Accounting.

Thomas P. Edmonds, Ph.D.: Dr. Edmonds is Professor of Accountancy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, (UAB). He has been actively involved in teaching accounting principles throughout his academic career. He has received several prestigious teaching awards, including the UAB President’s Excellence in Teaching Award and the distinguished Ellen Gregg Ingalls Award for excellence in classroom teaching. His academic experience includes being published in the Journal of Accounting Education, the Accounting Review, and the Journal of Accounting, Auditing and Finance among others. Dr. Edmonds received his Ph.D. in Accounting from Georgia State University.
