Focusing on the phenomenon of viral culture, Wasik, senior editor at Harper's magazine, reflects on his own Internet experiments, beginning with the creation of flash mobs, a pop phenomena of 2003. Funny Because It's Sad

I'm sort of a ringer, because I got to read this book in manuscript and I contributed a blurb for its jacket. Moreover, Bill Wasik is my editor at Harper's magazine. But I'll win no points with him for this review. The irony of this book is that it's a brilliant examination of viral stories by a man who's proved himself a master of creating them -- consider the Flash Mob -- and yet has little use for them himself. He's not trying to sell you a business method. He's trying to understand why the "stories we tell ourselves in order to live," to paraphrase Joan Didion, have gotten shorter, shallower, and more absurd, from that of a high school senior who sued to be made valedictorian to the white noise buzz surrounding the amorphous ur-band -- one group of musicians interchangeable with another -- that has become the object of pop culture's Sisyphean self-consumption. In the hands of a lesser writer, this argument would become a scolding, but Wasik makes it brilliantly funny, without ever losing sight of the tragic dimensions he's exploring.

More commentary on information overload and shortened attention spans

Continuing with the social media overload theme in the news of late, Wasik's book examines the ever-shortening life span of stories in our culture - whether it's news, gossip, or the latest best-seller - among the onslaught of email, RSS feeds, blog posts, and Tweets. He describes a world in which we have become so accustomed to a constant stream of new information, and so wary of always-encroaching boredom, that we tell stories about our society and ourselves, even when there is nothing new to say.

Besides the information glut, shortening attention spans, and overall exhaustion this creates, the really good content gets lost after its fleeting 15 minutes of fame (if that). And despite the broader array of news and opinion available to us, we have not necessarily broadened our horizons, but rather self-segregate ourselves into smaller & smaller niches of like-minded individuals.

The same themes were picked up in a Financial Times article last week, which noted that for many, social media has become "a more personal filter to the infinite world of the Internet." Where people use to turn to traditional portals like Yahoo! or AOL as their entry point, they are now turning to Facebook or their preferred feed aggregator, reading just the news & information that comes in from friends or other trusted sources. Ray Valdes, a media analyst from Gartner is quoted: "We are moving toward a world of `snackable' news'that'can be shared like pieces of candy or a pack of gum...Unfortunately, we run the risk of losing substance and nutritive value."

Wasik closes his book with a brief look at some of the "solutions" to Internet fatigue. Among them:

* Writer & editor Jake Silverstein's proposed Internet Ramadan, where people go offline for a month
* NYTimes writer Mark Bittman's Secular Sabbath, an experiment in going offline for a mere 24 hours
* Chip maker Intel's Quiet Time, where employees are encouraged to go offline each Tuesday morning in order to think (and work) more deeply

Should we be concerned? Or is our fast-paced lifestyle just the new norm, and the attention-getting books & headlines just another example of the trumped-up crises we crave?

A book on viral stories...and nobody's reviewed it?

There's a certain irony here. Bill Wasik has written a book about creating massive publicity for non-events. Yet the publication of his book - definitely not a non-event - doesn't seem to be attracting attention from reviewers.

Wasik's book is a collection of stories about the way he created online buzz. In one example, he entered a contest sponsored by Huffington press where websites competed for the most visitors. Wasik was supposed to cover the event as a reporter but ended up entering and winning. In another chapter, he tries and fails to stop the buzz on an indie band.

Wasik's point seems to be twofold. On the one hand, stories capture the imagination of the Internet world. While you're hot, bloggers wite about you and you're known everywhere. But these days stories have a really short shelf lne.

On the other hand, the stories don't get famous because they have such great content. Theyget famous because people like Wasik know how to spread the word. For instance, Wasik created the Mob scenes where hundreds of people descended on a particular place for no reason at all.

The book is enjoyable: fun to read with aIt would have been more satisfing if Wasik could explain why some stories go viral and some don't. How dos he know how to choose topics and create blogs that get attenton so fast? Is this a skill that others can learn?

Recommended for anyone interested in the Internet, the arts, communication theory or sociology. It's a livng lesson.

Enjoyable!!!!!

The series so far has been an exciting ride. I have done some audible and some reading; both work well for this series. The only negtive thing I could say is I am tired of hearing/reading about how they "know this will be the end - they will die" . I so want the "evil" dudes killed faster but the story line is richer with the good/evil struggle as Morgan presents it.

If you lie action, adventure, magic and enjoying the characters maturing before your eyes/ears, this is a good choice.

The good & the not so good

I'm not sure I will continue with this series. While I anxiously read all 4 books, I can't help but feel tired of the "never ending" story. I enjoyed the storyline. But, It has been too long and drawn out. Kyra's character is forever making the wrong decision, of course like that of a young and inexperienced child. You know everything she does will bring some sort of negative consequence. I started skimming the battle scenes because they were too wordy. Don't get me wrong. The author has a fabulous imagination for this fantastical story. This is the first I have read from this author. I just believe it should have been more concise. The editing could have been better. Some characters' names were interchanged from time to time. Sometimes a paragraph would be partially repeated. All in all, I like the story but I'm ready for the end. I'll have to think hard about #5 when it is available. I may not continue with it.

Great read, can't wait for the next book. This one does make you want to strangle Krya and tell her stop wasting you chances when you know what you're supposed to do. I'm going to have to retread all 4 books because they were that good.

The writing of the book has been motivated by years of unsuccessful search for an OO software engineering textbook that(1) teaches students practical, up-to-date problem-solving skills and solid theoretical foundations,(2) is interesting and easy to learn, and(3) contributes to the student's long term career growth.As the instructor, and director of the ABET accredited software engineering program, I feel obligated to develop the needed teaching material that fulfills these goals. The material presented in the book is the result of years of effort and continual improvements, based on my observation of students' performance, and the feedback received from students.The book is also written for instructors who want to switch to an agile software engineering approach. Software engineers and students who are puzzled by the problems faced in design, implementation and testing and who want to improve their OO development capabilities will find the book helpful. Background
Computers are widely used in all sectors of our society, performing a variety of functions with the application software running on them. As a result, the market for software engineers is booming. The March 2006 issue of the Money Magazine ranked software engineer as the number 1 of the 50 best jobs in U.S. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) 2010-2020 projections, the total number of jobs in application development software engineers and system analyst positions is expected to increase from 520,800 to 664,500 (27.6%) and from 544,400 to 664,800 (22.10%), respectively. To be able to perform the work required of an application development software engineer or systems analyst, an education in software engineering is highly desired. However, according to the data released by BLS ("Earned Awards and Degrees, by Field of Study, 2005-2006"), only 160 bachelor and 600 master's degrees in software engineering, and 10,289 bachelor and 4,512 master's degrees in computer science were awarded in 2006. Thus, there is a significant gap between the demand and supply, especially for graduates with a software engineering degree.
Many people do not know the scope and usefulness of software engineering as a practice, and the discipline is often misunderstood. Many media outlets seem to define software engineering as writing Java programs. Some students think that software engineering includes everything related to software. Others think that software engineering is drawing UML diagrams, as the following story illustrates. Several years ago, after the first class of an object-oriented software engineering (OOSE) course, a student said to me, "Professor, you know that this will be an easy course for me because we've drawn lots of UML diagrams before." At the end of the semester, the student came to me again and said, "Professor, I want to tell you that we had worked very hard but we learned a lot about OO design. It is not just drawing UML diagrams as I thought." So what is software engineering? As a discipline, it encompasses research, education and application of engineering processes, methodologies, quality assurance, and project management to significantly increase software productivity and software quality while reducing software cost and time to market.
OOSE is a branch of software engineering that is characterized by its view of the world as consisting of objects relating to and interacting with each other. The advent of the C++ programming language in the 1980s marked the beginning of the OOSE era. Since then, software production began its unprecedented world-wide growth and was further accelerated by the creation and world-wide adoption of the unified modeling language (UML) and the unified process (UP). Strictly speaking, a software process describes the phases and what should be done in each phase. It does not define (in detail) how to perform the activities in each phase. A modeling language, such as UML, defines the notations, syntax and semantics for communicating and documenting analysis and design ideas. UML and UP are good and necessary but not sufficient. This is because how to produce the analysis and design ideas required to draw meaningful UML diagrams is missing.
Motivation
To fill the gaps discussed in the last paragraph, we need a methodology or a "cookbook." Unlike a process, a methodology is a detailed description of the steps and procedures or how to carry out the activities to the extent that a beginner can follow to produce and deploy the desired software system. Without a methodology, a beginning software engineer would have to spend a few years of on-job training to learn OO design, implementation and testing skills.
The writing of the book is also motivated by emerging interests in agile processes, design patterns and test driven development (TDD). Agile processes emphasize teamwork, design for change, rapid deployment of small increments of the software system, and joint development with the customer and users. Design patterns are effective design solutions to common design problems. Design patterns promote software reuse and improve team communication. TDD advocates testable software, requires test scripts to be produced before the implementation so that the latter can be tested immediately and frequently.
As an analogy, consider the development of an amusement park. The overall process includes the following phases: planning, public approval, analysis and design, financing, construction drawings, construction, procurement of equipment, installation of equipment, pre-opening, and grand opening. However, knowing the overall process is not enough. The development team must know how to perform the activities of the phases. For example, the planning activities include development of initial concept, feasibility study, and master plan generation. The theme park team must know how to perform these activities. The analysis and design activities include "requirements acquisition" from stakeholders, site investigation, design of park layout, design of theming for different areas of the park, creating models to study the layout design and theming, and producing the master design. Again, the theme park team must know how to perform these activities to produce the master design. Unlike a process that describes the phases of activities, a methodology details the steps and procedures or how to perform the activities.
The development of an amusement park is a multi-year project and costs billions of dollars. The investor wants the park to generate revenue as early as possible; but with the above process, the investor has to wait until the entire park is completed. Once the master design is finalized, it cannot be modified easily due to the restrictions imposed by the conventional process. If the park does not meet the expectations of the stakeholders, then changes are costly once the park is completed.
Agile processes are aimed to solve these problems. With an agile process, a list of preliminary theme park requirements is acquired quickly and allowed to evolve during the development process. The amusement and entertainment facilities are then derived from the requirements and carefully grouped into clusters of facilities. A plan to develop and deploy the clusters in relatively short periods of time is produced --- that is, rapid deployment of small increments. Thus, instead of a finalized master design, the development process designs and deploys one cluster at a time. As the clusters of facilities are deployed and operational, feedback is sought and changes to the requirements, the development plan, budget and schedule are worked out with the stakeholders --- that is, joint development. In addition, the application of architectural design patterns improves quality and ability of the park to adapt to changing needs --- that is, design for change. Teamwork is emphasized because effective collaboration and coordination between the teams and team members ensure that the facilities will be developed and deployed timely and seamlessly.� The agile process has a number of merits. The investor can reap the benefits much earlier because the facilities are operational as early as desired and feasible. Since a small number of the facilities is developed and deployed at a time, errors can be corrected and changes can be made more easily.

A great book for learning and practicing OOSE

This is the best OO software engineering book that I have read so far. I have been using Professor Kung's teaching materials to teach all my four software engineering courses for many years. Since they are easy to understand, my students have learned and followed many software engineering principles and methods covered in the materials to implement various projects in the courses. The courses have been evaluated four of the best courses in the department. I am so glad that, after many years, Dr. Kung has finally decided to publish this book along with the materials.

The book covers very practical and useful methods that are needed for software development. Different modeling methods are introduced in detail for developing different software systems (chapters 7 to 15). There are many great new features about the book. One of them is at the end of each chapter the author covers useful tools and methods for system modeling based on his substantial experiences in industry. Students should have no problem to pick up the tools and methods that have been used in industry immediately after graduation. Another great feature is the author uses simple but practical examples to explain how to use the methods covered in the book. For instance, a lot of examples are used to illustrate how to test OO systems (chapters 19 to 20), and how to apply design patterns (chapters 16 to 17) to save efforts in system design.

Because there are so many great features and topics in the book, I will recommend instructors to cover them in two or three semesters (courses). After learning the topics, students should become a well-trained software engineer.

A better subtitle would be 'A Long Winded Agile Unified Mythology'.

I'm all for agile processes but much of the research that is cited is garbage. One study cited and reprinted in the book reported a p-value of .48 :( . I don't know too many field where .48 margin-of error passes as reliable evidence. Most studies cited were questionably designed, used too few subjects to be reliable, yet the author uses them as premises and then builds arguments on them that are presented as fact. If you are a professor please read this book before assigning it to your class.

this peanut butter wasn't creamy enough

I have read the first and second book for I got to this one. So I know when I see that the art was the biggest change to the story. That really bugged the hell out of me. The story wasn't as great and I had a hard time getting through this book. To me it felt like the sex and porn were pushed on to the reader and wasn't really part of the story, not like the first two that had great art work and deep story. This was more sex than anything's. So if you like stories with little story and more sex this book is for you.

"The world, like a mirror, reflects your attitudes towards it."

This volume V and the last volume to be translated into English so far gives us much greater insight into how we can choose our life-track. According to Vadim, the world is divided up into what we term as physical or real and virtual. The real is like a reflection from a mirror. The real world is the reflection of how we imagine and have decided the world to be. Of course, the bits are common to how all beings in the planet manifest. The juxtaposition and meaning of the bits are largely dependent on what one thinks is there. How many of us have noticed that when we are sleeping awake [caught up in a head trip of rationality] we only see what we think is there.
On the other side of the mirror is a vast space of variations [introduced and explained in volume I] where the potentialities are endless. Our life-track of manifestations are most usually formed by pendulums for those who live by societies expectations and are sleeping awake. Only a few realize the power of their intentions and take what is theirs to have by choosing. I am reminded of a saying by Ramana Maharshi: "Realization is to get rid of the delusion that you have not realized." Similarly, we don't get what we want from life because we don't understand that we can choose a life-track that fulfills our desires. All five of the Transurfing volumes help us to learn to take from life what is already there waiting to be manifest.
Throughout the book, a mirror is used as a fulcrum to illustrate the ideas of Transurfing.
Volume V reveals a consolidation of methods and procedures mentioned in the previous volumes towards the achievement of your goals and your ability to take charge of your life-track. You won't want to miss it.

This is translated from the Russian, so it is not quite idiomatic. It is still very readable. The author is basically discussing Quantum Mechanics[QM] in a very simple way, which can be applied to daily life. I would recommend reading the whole series, in sequence, as the author recommends. I read these like a detective novel, as fast as I could go. They are fascinating. QM is not easy to understand. If you want to see other applications of QM, Matrix Energetics: The Science and Art of Transformation, House of Shattering Light: Life as an American Indian Mystic, Quantum Power Questions, and The Secret of Instant Healing are all useful. QM now is life changing, just as Newtonian Physics was in its day. It is a major paradigm shift, and once you climb the learning curve, it makes life fun! A lot of fun. Journey to the Ancestral Self: The Native Lifeway Guide to Living in Harmony with the Earth Mother (Bk.1) is another book worth being aware of.

The five book series talks about quantum mechanics, in daily life. This is a very interesting subject. I found his books mentioned several times in The Key to The Secret: How to Manifest from the Heart, and got them. These books are easy to understand, but difficult to describe until you read them. It is like hearing a fascinating story, following all the details, but knowing only the outcome when the story finishes. He uses many practical examples to illustrate his ideas. He promises that if you read all 5 books, your world will be different, and better. Mine has changed as a result of reading these. Matrix Energetics: The Science and Art of Transformation would also be helpful to unravel these books. Mis principios (Spanish Edition) is by Emilio Duran, who also cites mecanicas cuanticas, Quantum Mechanics ideas in daily life. The Reality Creation Technique is another approach to this. Seven Life Lessons of Chaos: Spiritual Wisdom from the Science of Change would also be useful.
