Grade 5-8–The bombing of Pearl Harbor puts an end to 11-year-old Joe Hanada's happy-go-lucky life in the White River Valley near Seattle. Basketball, marbles, and Christmas plans are suddenly overshadowed by fears about the war. When longtime acquaintances begin to suspect Japanese-Americans of being spies, even the loyalty of Joe's Caucasian best friend can't soften the hurt of being called names or of having his father, a leader in the Issei community, taken away by the FBI. Joe finds comfort in his journal, where he records his impressions in both prose and haiku. After he is sent to the Tule Lake Relocation Camp in California with his older brother Mike and their mother and grandmother, Joe finds relief from the tedium of confinement in his writing. When Mike turns 18, he volunteers for the Army, eager to prove his loyalty. Not all of the detainees share his desire to fight for the U.S. Some request repatriation to Japan, while others forbid their children to speak English. The inclusion of many differing viewpoints within the Japanese-American community makes this book unique. First Joe's immigrant dad is arrested and held in secret. Then the rest of the family is removed to internment camps. Joe's older brother can't wait to join the army and prove his loyalty, and he fights the Nazis in Europe, but that doesn't reduce the prejudice and the family's hardship. There have been several books about the Japanese American internment--fiction, nonfiction, and even a few picture books--including Ken Mochizuki's Baseball Saved Us (1993) and Yoshiko Uchida's autobiographical accounts. Like some of those, this one makes history the drama, and Patneaude scrupulously reports the facts and shows the wide range of attitudes among Japanese Americans and whites, citizens and immigrants, even among members of one family. Basing his story on extensive research and interviews, the author does a fine job of bringing the daily experience up close through the story of an American kid torn from home. Hazel Rochman

Sweet, slow, sad

Thin Wood Walls follows young Joe Hanada's family experiences during the time of WWII. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Joe's father is taken away by the FBI as a person of suspicion because he is a community leader. The rest of the family, including Joe's feisty grandmother and more feisty big brother Mike, are taken to Tule Lake Relocation Camp and must adjust to a new life while anxiously awaiting the return of the father.

Not much happens in the book, as camp life is boredom, waiting, hoping, but Joe tries to make do and make sense of what is happening while fearing what his big brother intends to do. The story is balanced, showing how not all white Americans were against the Japanese in the U.S. Some Japanese were very angry while many exhibited a sad stoicism. Perhaps what sets this book apart from other internment stories is that it is set in the Tule Lake camp, which was where troublemakers, the "no-no's" and those wanting to return to Japan were sent. This created a turbulent, sometimes dangerous atmosphere that other camps did not experience, at least not on that level. Thin Wood Walls delves into this in a manner suitable for middle-graders.

The book is a bit slow, but sweet, the writing rather plain despite the bits of haiku, but this will appeal to boys as well as girls and provide a thoughtful look at the sad facts of this long-hidden part of U.S. history. Expect a tear at the end, and be sure to read the Author's Notes.

Looking Like the Enemy: My Story of Imprisonment in Japanese American Internment Camps is also set in Tule Lake, but is a true story. A Young Reader's edition is coming out in Fall 2010.

I just got this book and wanted to say that if you want to know all there is to know about alkaline water you should definitely read it. The positive, the negative, how to and more. You will know why you should drink it, how to make it, what it does for you and your body. The author also explains any risks or things to consider if you want to try alkalinized water.

It's all written in a simple, easy to understand way. You won't need a college degree to understand what he is talking about. The instructions on how to build the homemade water ionizer is written in great detail. There are also photos and first hand tips and tools that he used. He tells you how to do everything to build, hook up and use the ionizer.

I can't imagine anyone needing more details than he gives in this book, but if you are still lost after reading it, the author has provided 40 other links to various "how to" related articles and videos that meet the same standards of his descriptions. It will take all the guess work out of building your water ionizer so you can start drinking better tasting, healthier water.

I know I am ready to start building my own and I'll be using this book to tell me how!

I haven't seen another book out there like this one. It shows you how to get your own Ionized Water for almost free.
If you are going to drink Ionized Water then this is the way to go.

Lots of Good Information

I saw one of the comments that said that you could get this info on YouTube and this almost made me not buy it. The reality is that he has a lot of detailed videos… like 40 or so. He seems to keep the info updated as well. What I really liked is that you can get great tasting drinking water from this system.:)

The other systems say that you have to use salt in the water… yuck! He shows a way to do it without even using any electrolyte. Another thing is that he has figured out how to use regular stainless steel for the electrodes instead of titanium, and he found out a way so that the negative electrode is coated so that it is really not even touching the water! Also his way prevents any erosion of the positive electrode as well. That’s a big deal for me as well… he made a cool discovery with that!

I put it at 3 only because there is a lot of info but I guess that’s a good thing really. Pay a few bucks and then save hundreds… I say that is well worth it!

Out of kindness I have chosen to rate this a two-star publication. There are a few, very few, useful statements here for traders.

What else would one expect from a person that does not trade? Merely talking with successful traders does not imbue one with trading wisdom.

Like all of Tharp's work, from what I have seen, the title belies the content. That is, little to no worthwhile content, but a captivating title. Anyone that honestly believes themselves to be credible enough to write a trading book that can deliver "Financial Freedom" that has never traded professionally should not be believed. It would be similar to seeking advice from a homeless person about becoming a billionaire.

Another credibility issue for me with this author is that he is now hawking "No Money Down" and "Get Rich in Real Estate" tapes, books, seminars, etc. I would speculate that Tharp would sell widgets, or, at a minimum, books about widgets, if he believed there was money to be made.

I find it impossible to believe this person could ever be a credible source of information about trading! His trading resume consists of ..., well nothing, except the idea of how to make money by writing words on a subject he knows nothing about.

Many more useful, credible books exist that will help in attaining real financial freedom. Brett Steenbarger is a trader and has produced good material on the psychology of trading, and Mark Douglas, even though he does not trade, has produced more interesting and valuable books.

The most useful advice, read books about trading that are written by traders, and read reviews written by people who trade every day.

Why and how to design a successful trading system

Thousands, if not millions, of people waste huge amounts of money and time every year searching for some get-rich-quick Holy Grail of trading. Tharp's somewhat misleadingly titled Trade Your Way to Financial Freedom is definitely not a get-rich-quick technique. Nor is it even a guide to analyzing the markets; there are no fundamental analysis approaches, no technical chart patterns, no quantitative formulae. Instead, Tharp offers something totally different and far more useful: he systematically describes why you should develop your own trading system and how you should go about building and testing it.

Description:

An expert in trading psychology, Tharp quickly covers why most novice traders fail due to psychological problems trading and unrealistic expectations of the market. He advocates that an individual rationally lay out objectives for trading and design their own system, using whatever techniques work best for them, to meet their goals. Tharp goes on to describe the components of a trading system and how to objectively judge between them. He stresses the importance of money management and position sizing; two areas where traders should spend much of their time but often ignore. Just to be clear, there are no trading techniques at all in this book: no technical analysis signals, no material on how to pick stocks or futures, nothing like that - just how to build a system and overcome some of the psychological barriers to successful trading.

Opinion:

As a professional commodities trader, I believe that a thorough reading of Tharp's work will give a novice trader the benefit of years of hard-earned wisdom. It can take years of mistakes and losing money before internalizing the lessons Tharp gives out for a relatively extremely cheap price! It is very important to think about position sizing and money management. It is equally important to have a technique that can be objectively evaluated rather than trading randomly. No matter how you choose to approach the markets, whether by reading technical charts, fundamental reports, or quantitative models, Tharp's advice is excellent.

I was able to identify a key psychological trait that has caused me to consistently lose money in the markets. Plus, it is the best book I've read in terms of positioning (size of position) stop loss placement. I think every trader should read this book as part of their basic preparation for trading.

(a) Dr Linda Botterill is a Post Doctoral Fellow in the National Europe Centre at the Australian National University where she is undertaking research on agricultural policy in Australia and Europe. She also lectures in political science in the School of Social Sciences. Dr Botterill has extensive experience in public policy having worked in the Australian Government Department of Primary Industries and Energy, as an adviser to two Cabinet Ministers and as a policy officer in two industry associations before undertaking her doctorate in political science at the ANU.

Great way to end this series!

This was a great series and this book was just how it needed to be ended! Every question I had was answered! I couldn't pick my favorite character, they are all to good and important.
The plot is a little "crazy" but of course that's why it's interesting. I thought the book flowed very nicely, not over done with the little details but just enough! This isn't your typical love story, yes love is involved but it so much more! I look forward to reading more from this author! Great job!

Not working right on Kindle

The book itself looks great -- it's exactly what I've been looking for for years, but since I live overseas, I must order it on the Kindle. I read the first chapter and found that the rest of the book refuses to download and it closes every time I try to access the rest of the book. Also, I ordered the $10 rental, but was charged for the $18 purchase. Amazon needs to iron out the kinks here and then I'll give a better review.

The Straight Path For Screenwriting Students

THE SCREENWITER'S ROADMAP aims to minimize floundering, stumbling and flailing by new screenwriters. Each chapter systematically guides screenwriting students on a specific topic, and continues with a relevant interview of this topic's expert to help readers envision the scope. An assignment is given to allow readers explore the viability of the suggested ideas.

An experienced professor in screenwriting with many successful screenplays to his name, Neil Landau states on the outset that there is no absolute formula when it comes to writing a successful screenplay. This is illustrated by the differing responses of the successful screenwriters he interviews. Landau's questions are incisive and straightforward, yet at times he receives lengthy roundabout replies.

Simplistic readers may object to the full quotes in several interviews and wonder why they have not been simplified. The truth, I conclude, is that simplistic people have no business screenwriting. There are various aspects and layers you need to look into and must never neglect or belittle. Brilliance, I see, is a prerequisite. And brilliant students will have no problems discerning these experts' answers, which, in the first place, are there not because Mr. Landau is not in a position to edit direct quotes, but because they are necessary. I found them not only helpful, but enjoyable, in fact. You get to look into various heads and learn how the fascinating minds work, while at the same time see these admirable individuals for the persons they are. For me, this is a delightful bonus.

The human aspects, intriguing insights, and tips from real-life experiences are parts that no reader will ever find when they google Screenwriting 101. THE SCREENWRITER'S ROADMAP is unique and is so much more than your usual lessons in writing techniques, which, here, are easy to follow and clearly outlined in details. You can easily see that Mr. Landau is a brilliant writer and an experienced teacher. He is also connected to many successful personage in the film industry, 21 of whom contribute wealth of knowledge and tips into this treatise.

Will following the book's 21 chapters jumpstart new screenwriters to the expert level? Not overnight because that requires practice, and Mr Landau has challenged them to write what they most fear. However, the mapped road is certain to take them there along the straight path.

A GREAT WAY TO SAVE YOUR SCRIPT

THE SCREENWRITER'S ROADMAP offers great perspectives from the top scribes, and a solid step-by-step plan for newbie screenwriters but what makes it so special is its ability to help on draft 2, 5 or 25.

There are loads of exercises and questions to help troubleshoot and look at your story from a fresh angle, when you're already tired of staring at the same scenes. The interviews delve deep into the craft, discussing the headaches of multiple drafts and how MUCH a script will change from initial inspiration to the last on-set rewrite. The book's other asset is its avoidance of formulas and quick fixes. Neil respects the movies that don't play by the rules, and doesn't pretend there's only one right way to tell a story on screen. It's pragmatic without being cynical, and positive without devolving into a pep talk.

Even if you've got a shelf full of screenwriting tomes, it's time to make room for the ROADMAP.

Not Only for Showrunners

Neil Landau's very comprehensive new book, "The TV Showrunner's Roadmap," is titled incorrectly: �It should be "The Everything You Need to Know to Write for TV Roadmap." �It's 296 pages jammed with everything a television writer needs to know about writing for television, from the pitch to the supervising of an up and running show.�

Neil lays out 21 steps on how to create and sustain a television series, supporting each one with valuable interviews with some of television's most successful showrunners (the people at the top of the food chain when it comes to running a series). �What was most impressive to me was the depth of research on hundreds of shows, past and present, that Neil uses to support his main points. �In one chapter, there's a chart of most current programs (and that's saying a lot) and how they're broken down into acts. �The amount of time just analysing programs for that fact alone is staggering. �

I have only one criticism of the book and that's its lack for illustrative pictures. �Of course, this is a rights question, and it may have been too expensive to include photos of even one tenth of the shows mentioned. �I'm only hoping that this first edition will be successful enough to enable the publishers to include photos in the next edition.�

As a professor in the Loyola Marymount University's MFA program in writing and producing for television, I'm going to recommend that all of my students read this book. �If you have any thoughts about a career writing for television, I recommend that you read it, too.�
