Great Book, Deep into Details of this new Fighter

We know how to build a stealth fighter. We know how to build a long-range agile fighter. We may even have a good way of building a fighter that can land and take off vertically. But trying to build a fighter that can do all three is very, very difficult."

But that's exactly what Lockheed Martin is building in the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. Perhaps trying to build is a better term. It looked like possible in 2001 when the contract was let. By 2004 the plane had gained weight and the lift wasn't quite there to take off vertically.

This is a great book. It is mostly on the details of the competitive designs being proposed by Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For five years these two companies worked on the design of the fighters they were proposing, even to building flying prototypes. Reading the book gets you deep into the design effort, the philosophies of the two companies, and the politics involved. You know more about the F-35 than you imagined possible.

A disappointment

This is more of a coffee table book. There is very little excitement when reading through the book. The book is even less exciting than the BBC documentary of the same account of Boeing and Lockheed competing for the winning design. Most of all, you don't sense the human factor, the human drama in this book. Contrast this book with the Skunk Work book by Ben Rich and you can see the difference. Again, this is just a coffee table book that you look flip once in a while and not a book like Mr. Rich's that you go back to for inspirational ideas.

SWEETMAN does it again

Usual excellent detail from Bill Sweetman. Having been involved in the fly off from the Navy perspective I was last little disappointed that there was not more detail of the work done at Pax River. It would be really interesting if someone would do a history of this program from the perspective of the government folks watching the fly off of both aircraft. The stories that could be told...

About the Author

Mauro was born in Italy in 1951. His family immigrated to the United States in 1959 and settled in Milford, MA, where he grew up and went to school. In 1970 he attended the New England School of Art in Boston and later attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and graduated with a BFA, majoring in Sculpture and with minors in Printmaking and Education in 1975.

He worked as an Art Teacher in his hometown of Milford MA. School System. After 3 years as a teacher he and his wife, Cynthia, decided to move out to California in 1978 where he hoped to enter the animation industry.

He got started out as a trainee character animator in the Disney Animation Training Program run by legendary Disney animator Eric Larson and next moved on to Hanna Barbera where he worked as a character animator on Saturday morning TV cartoons such as Godzilla, Superfriends, Scooby Doo and The Smurfs and the Hanna Barbera feature film, Heidi's Song.
In 1981 the opportunity to work with Frank Frazetta on the Ralph Bakshi production of "Fire and Ice" presented itself and he jumped at it, doing character and effects animation on that film.
Once production on "Fire and Ice" ended he returned to Disney to work on "The Black Cauldron".

In 1985 he decided to leave Disney and go into Live action special effects. Working at Richard Edlund's Boss Films Corp., as well as Perpetual Motion Pictures Studio and Dreamquest Studio, working on films such as, Poltergeist II, Big Trouble in Little China, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, and Alien III, and many others.
Baer Animation was next, working on TV commercials. Eventually returning once again to Disney in 1993 and worked there as an Effects Animator, Sequence Supervisor and Effects Supervisor/Head of Effects, on the films, Lion King, Hunchback, Hercules and many others until his last, Princess and the Frog in 2009.

Since leaving Disney, he has been freelancing on TV commercials and sculpting as a Studio Associate for Sculptor, Ron Pekar on a monumental sculpture for USC of their Mascot "Traveler" Football Legends Monument for the Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena. Presently Mauro teaches Traditional Animation courses at Otis School of Art and Design in L. A. and The Laguna School of Art and Design in Laguna, Ca.
He may be retired from the animation business but he still draws and sculpts each and every day.
He just can't stop!

Yet Mounk’s immediate family carved out an existence in their native Poland, most as loyal Communists, until anti-Semitic party purges in the 1960s and ’70s led them to settle in Germany, where Mounk was born, in 1982. As a young Jew growing up in postwar Germany, his revelation to friends and acquaintances of his Jewish identity elicited a variety of responses, some predictable and some surprising. Some people were openly hostile, spouting blatantly racist screeds. Others reacted with what is best termed sullen silence, while others felt compelled to overreact with a stance of exaggerated philo-Semitism. More recently, Mounk has detected a shift in attitudes of many Germans, which has broad implications beyond relations with Jews. A personal story and the difficult interaction of two peoples

A smart and fascinating study of an impossible situation told in the context of Mounk's own experiences growing up in Germany: Germans and Jews trying against all odds to figure out how to be normal with one another, and failing. Not, as Mount takes pains to point out, for want of trying, but the historical legacy, with all its attendant ambivalence, guilt and resentment, is just too overwhelming to be overcome with mere goodwill. Mounk's survey of the ongoing tensions emanating from the Nazi past extend beyond autobiography to German cultural life (e.g., Martin Walser, G�nter Grass) and public policy (debates on participation in NATO- or U.S.-supported wars, demands on the weaker economies within the EU). - You have to feel sorry for the Germans, who can't seem to win for losing. (Mounk is careful to emphasize, however, that white Americans, with our own painful history and fraught race relations, have no reason to be smug.) While reading this book, I learned from the newspaper that some 30,000 Israelis, mainly young people, are now living in Berlin, which got me to wondering whether the problems Mounk describes are to some extent trumped by the "normalcy" of being Israeli. - I found the most moving section of the book to be Mounk's description of German Chancellor Willy Brandt's falling to his knees at the Warsaw Ghetto monument in 1970: "For one long moment there is no movement. Faces freeze. Nobody breathes. After an eternity, Brandt's breath becomes visible: he exhales, perhaps surprised by his own gesture, undoubtedly relieved to have done justice to the occasion. He, who has no personal guilt, has issued a moving plea for forgiveness. He, who need not apologize to anybody, has kneeled on behalf of those who dare not or cared not to. It was a gesture that did as much for Germany's reconciliation with the victims of the Third Reich as thirty years [1949 - 1970?] of democratic rule."

easy to read steps

I teach an introductory research course at a local college, and this is not the book that I teach from for the course, but it should be! The book carefully outlines all of the steps of the research process in simple, easy to read steps. I use it as a supplement to our required text, and it provides a lot of clarification for my students!

Whether it was in a cave, an early Minoan palace or an American Federalist home, people have always looked to bring color and design into their living spaces. Both science and psychology influence the art of marrying style and pigment: "Nature has always provided the visual stimulation of color, light and texture, while history has shown the human need for variety and change," writes Rompilla in her breathless survey of 3000 years of architecture, art history, color theory and science. Complementing an eclectic assortment of 125 illustrations (including 95 in color), the text is concise, lucid and well-organized. Such an ambitious synthesis could have easily become either chaotic and dense or thin and overly simplistic, but Rompilla hits all the highlights and stays on point, even when covering Aristotle in a few lines: "He believed that the rainbow had only three fixed, or primary colors: red, green and blue (although yellow was visible), and he assigned these three primaries to pigment as well." Broad ranging despite its brevity, her introduction to the study and practice of color for interiors leaves the reader with the sense of the complexity and depth of the subject-and might inspire some to study further. Except for a few anomalies, such as an out-of-focus photograph of Josef Hoffmann's Palais Stoclet, the art is well-chosen, nicely reproduced and beautifully incorporated into the book's coffee-table format.

About the Author
Ethel Rompilla is a professor of colour and an associate dean of the New York School of Interior Design in Manhattan. The recipient of numerous awards for her teaching of colour, she is also a practicing interior designer. Prior to her educational work, she was a designer with the firm of Hellmuth Obata Kassabaum Architects in New York and a collaborator with furniture designer Norman Diekman.

Very nice, but more of a textbook.

This book has some lovely interiors and color combination ideas, but it's more of a textbook and has many pages devoted to color spectrum charts and the science of color. I read about it in a well-known home decorating magazine which described it as one of the best books for decorating with color, but I really found it a little too technical. If you are a design student, it would probably be more appropriate.

A good beginner's handbook

This book is good for those who have limited background in color theory and want a concise history of color. Most of the book discusses color from cave to modern and contemporary periods culminating with applications to decorating. The color plates are good examples of the content being presented. Certainly a good handbook for a beginner.
