An Example of Dying to Self

I have read this book many times since I was about 12 years old and I wanted to become Amy C. Jr. :) Mrs. Elliot doesn't write in an especially easy-reading way for children, but it was the best influence I could've had at that time. I love the title; it sums up this book so well. All of us Christians have this chance to die to self for our Savior, and we couldn't do better than to follow the example of saints like Amy who have gone before us. Of course, Christ is our ultimate example, but it helps to have human examples as well, so we can see how people deal with sin in their pursuit of becoming like Christ.
This book is worth reading again and again, and it makes an excellent gift.

An extraordinary woman with conviction and joy amidst hardship

This is an amazing biography. Elisabeth Elliot is a gifted speaker and author. I especially enjoyed reading this book and "The Shaping of a Christian Family." Amy's life has had a strong impact on my life and I am happy to recommend this biography to any who are seeking a deep and joyous Christian life. She demonstrated through her life that her Lord was supremely valuable to her, more than life itself.

Amazing life of sacrifice by Amy Carmichael- Challenges me to sacrifice more and lean not on our American conforts as much.

Well written by Elisabeth Elliot, a wonderful Christian who knows about sacrifice in her own life as her husband was killed on the mission field. The book describes Carmichael's life of unbelievable and absolute commitment to Christ. She never makes a decision but that it is vetted by the Scriptures and the life of Christ. She had valid opinions about many matters such as 'Always to; never about' when trying to solve problems with another person. This unwavering commitment to Christ was instrumental in saving thousands of young children from the temple sex trade. I don't want to spoil any specific details, but at the end of her life a challenge occurs that would have me (arrogantly) unhappy; however, Amy Carmichael's response is grace and love for her Savior based on her underlying strong belief that if Christ suffered for her, why shouldn't she suffer for Him. A new perspective for me, a spoiled American. Thank you Elisabeth Elliot for bringing Carmichael's life to the forefront.

This book is as good, if not better than the "making of" book for the first Jurassic Park Movie. It's filled with great pictures, and stories of preproduction, and production. If you want a good look behind the scenes, this is what you'll want!

I enjoined this book very much and I think that every one who saw this movie (The Lost World: Jurassic Park) and saw all those amazing special effects that where used in the movie, will love to read it and impress even more!

Excellent book for collectors!

If you're a fan of Jurassic Park, or how movies are made in general, you'd really dig this. I purchased a copy several years ago, when I was on a Jurassic Park binge. It is chock full of information on how the second Jurassic Park film was made, from conception to the final cut. It is a really neat book to read and it details just about everything you could think of. Filled with probably a couple hundred pictures, and they're all neatly labeled. My only gripe is that this book is a bit shorter and smaller in size than the first "Making Of..." book, published to accompany the first movie. Other than that, it is a great read if you can find a cheap copy.

In my wildest imaginations I could never have predicted me writing anything, but especially any scholarly work on tactics.� I was born and raised on a farm in rural Michigan and spent my youth living a life right out of Garrison Keillor's books.� I joined the U.S. Marine Corps right out of high school and experienced my first bus ride, first taxi ride, first plane ride, stayed in my first hotel and saw my first movie in boot camp.� Within six-months I was in Vietnam and being trained by a Gunnery Sgt. from the Korean War.� Our First Sgt. was a World War II veteran.� Tactics took on a whole new meaning and my lessons were reinforced daily.� Upon returning to CONUS I quickly married the girl of my dreams (my wife, Linda, of the last 40 years), went to college and joined the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.� I had stayed in the USMCR to help pay for college and was eventually promoted to officer and was sent to some of the best military schools throughout the United States.� (not to mention the Marine Corps' tour of third-world countries in crisis)

My career with the LASD continued until I found myself as a Team Leader of one of the department's six, full-time SWAT teams.� Tactics took on a whole new meaning and I began studying in earnest.� As I gained more knowledge my interest only quickened and I began teaching and travelling as both an instructor for the LASD and USMC.� As a result, I was personally present for the responses to such things as the coup d'�tat in Thailand (1992), the Oklahoma City Bombing (1995), the attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center (2001) and a host of others.� For whatever reason, I just seemed to "get it" when it came to disasters and tactical operations and I continued up the career path and eventually was put in charge of the Special Operations Bureau.

Somewhere along this path I decided to write a primer on tactical science focused on domestic safety services--Sound Doctrine.� It was well-received and so I wrote another one on how to determine floor plans from architectural features.� This was another subject that surprised me in that I am also a licensed general contractor and would never have thought my knowledge of building practices would have any value in law enforcement.� An Illustrated Guide to Tactical Diagramming was published in 2006.

I am retired now and, in between cross-country bicycle rides and playing with the grandkids, am working on a full-length text on tactical science focused specifically on domestic law enforcement applications.� I've got three smarter people, all combat veterans, looking over my shoulder to make sure it makes sense when I'm done.� The working title is Field Command and I'm hoping it will be out by the fall of 2011.

About the Author
Charles "Sid" Heal is a Commander at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. He holds three college degrees, two lifetime California teaching credentials, and is a recipient of more than 90 commendations from law enforcement, military, and governmental agencies.� More importantly for this book, he is also a licensed general contractor who has owned his own contracting business for more than two decades.

How to "Read" Urban Structures

The "Illustrated Guide to Tactical Diagraming: How to Determine Floor Plans from Outside Architectural Features" by Sid Heal is the bible to tactical architectural interpretation of urban physical infrastructure for military and police operations, and is also a very handy skill for urban evasion and escape activities. This book provides the necessary skills properly interpret design features of urban structures. This allows the police or military operator to determine very accurately the floor plan or tactical operations. This book assumes that the reader has no knowledge of construction, codes and regulations of that of a building contractor. The book is designed to read cover to cover or referenced as necessary for specific information. I highly recommend this book to Special Forces operators and law enforcement officers that deal with dynamic assaults and/or hostage rescue.

Easy to read

I just finished this book and I thought it was great. It's an easy read and will have you looking at houses with a lot more understanding of whats inside.

Written in the early '70s, Golf My Way is the first of the truly modern instructionals mixing physics and kinesiology with theory and technique. The writing's a little dense, but the illustrations are quite good, and some of the mental exercises nothing less than revolutionary. If there's a caveat to Golf My Way, it's that Jack's way works for Jack's game, and may not mesh with yours. Then again, this is the book that introduced Ernie Els to golf, and look what he's done.

About the Author
Jack Nicklaus was born in 1940 in Columbus, Ohio, and maintains a home there and in Florida. Widely regarded as the greatest golfer of all time, he has achieved a record twenty major championship victories, consisting of two U.S. Amateurs, six Masters (also a record), four U.S. Opens, three British Opens, and five PGA Championships. The winner of more than 100 professional tournaments around the world, Nicklaus was named Golfer of the Century in 1988.

Ken Bowden was the editorial director of both Europe's and America's premier golf magazines, and has collaborated with Nicklaus on eleven books. Since first watching Nicklaus compete in 1959, Bowden has witnessed a great many of Jack's achievements first-hand.

The Soul of a Legend

Jack surprises and will delight any lover of golf. This book might be better titled "Life My Way," since it is more of a memoir than an instruction book.

That's good, since the advice given is nothing almost every golfer has not heard in other books or from his pro. It is a bit dated advice wise. For instance, Jack gives a fair amount of advice particular to long irons, yet most of us today use hybrids. Transferring the knowledge is difficult, and maybe not possible. Also, Jack relies on his own physiological characteristics in developing his style which might not be very applicable to those with other characteristics such as leg strength and hand size. Be cautious of imitation!

In some ways this book is a good antidote for those addicted to golf. While Jack still plays he seems to have formed a greater attachment to tennis for personal pleasure. Nevertheless, I really liked the book because it seems to reveal the real person underneath the legend. And, Jack is a very interesting person.

good book for someone struggling with a hook. ;)

i've battled a hook since i started playing golf. Nicklaus describes his swing in detail, and as most of you know, he played the majority of his golf with a "power fade" and only occasionally played a draw on certain courses. i applied many of his set-up points and especially the grip and my hooks with the irons became clearly less frequent. On the other hand, when i tried his set up for the driver, i began slicing the ball pretty badly. i guess it just re-enforces the idea that one needs two different swings.

book is nice to read and the narrator is clearly present and opposed to being pretty detached, such as the seven laws of the golf swing book.

Vastly overrated

I found this book disappointing. I had hoped for a book which addressed the technical details of the swing--a book to instruct. Instead, the book present few details and more general remarks on playing the game. I've read Hogan's books and Trevino's book. These at least contained detailed instructions on the dynamics and techniques for their way of swing the club. This book is destined for my favorite used book store.

Perfect for all Ages!!

This series of books is perfect for a little scientist or future scientist. My son never sits still during our nightly read but as soon as I started to read The Earthshaking Earthquake Mystery's he never mood an inch. It is written towards 8 year old's because it highlights certain scientific words which can be found at end of the book under glossary.
The book has three main characters the mad scientist father Artemis Masters and this two children Curie Masters 12 and Nicolas Copernicus Masters 8 and they are all brilliant. The book takes the family on an adventure across the United States to where all the major seismic actives Yellowstone, San Fransisco, New Madrid Mo and so much more. The adventure starts off with someone trying to steal Artemis earthquake detector and the kids are trying to solve the mystery before the Master Motion Detector is stolen. The interaction between the two kids is really fun and it is your typical brother sister relationship which makes it easier for kids to identify with. When the brother and sister fight my son was like "Yup Roxie (3) and I act like that too."
The book surprised me the author created cliff hangers at the end of each chapter keeping the reader going until the book is finished. The book does have some illustrations making it fun for younger kids to look on while someone is reading to them.
At the end of the book the author created a section called Book Club Talk About It, Book Club Bring It To Life, Earthshaking Earthquake Trivia, Glossary, and Tech Connects. Each section bring the topic of the book to life in the Book Bub section questions are asked to make the child think. For example Why do you think more Earthquakes happen in the western parts of the country? The next section has you put some the experiments Master family test out in the book for kids for themselves or creating a Earthquake Survival Kit. I enjoyed the trivia as an adult because I learned so many new things about earthquakes like " Moonshakes" are earthquakes on the moon but they are smaller and happen less frequent. My son enjoyed the last section the best because he was able to get on the computer and enjoy the online experience.
I highly recommend this book and the series of book written by Carole Marsh. In the famous words of my 5 year old son "That Book Was Awesome!! When are you going to order the next book about Volcanoes."

The Earthshaking Earthquake Mystery is an exciting chapter book for young adults that blends wacky adventure with an introduction to amazing science. When a (sort of) mad scientist dad takes his two children to the San Andreas fault, New Madrid in Missouri, and other earthquake-heavy places, he teaches them about famous earthquakes of history, basic plate tectonics, ways in which earthquakes might be predicted in the near future, and much more. A handful of cartoony black-and-white illustrations enhance this wonderful blend of history, trivia, and seismography ideal for entertaining and educating budding young minds.
