A worthy introduction to NLG (natural language generation)

Summary: Reiter and Dale provide a useful introduction to NLG.
Review: This book is probably the first of its kind. Although there has been considerable work in natural language summarization, research in producing natural language is in its infancy. The authors draw upon actual NLG systems to illustrate the techinical issues involved. They are careful to point out that NLG may not be the best solution for the reader's practical problems. For instance, human writers might produce better text, or mail-merge programs might do the job (albeit with lower quality) at a significantly lower price. A shortcoming -- perhaps a necessary one -- is that the authors hesitate to describe research and development trends for the past decade. The reason does not appear to be a shortage of the quality and quantity of NLG R&D, because the authors do analyze trends for the 1970's and the 1980's. Are the authors hesitant to criticize their contemporary colleagues? A blunt trends analysis would have been helpful, particularly for readers new to the field.

St. Augustine and his Times

It is said that if anyone claims to have read all of Augustine, he is a liar. Certainly, given the sheer amount of written works by Augustine, some even found recently, this is a reasonable phrase. But Coral Harrison comes very close to proving this phrase wrong.
In this exceptionally well-written text, Harrison outlines the major threads in Augustine's thought, seeing them in the context of his life and his times. Along with this, she clearly has a good grasp on the veritable ocean of secondary literature on Augustine.
For those not familiar with St. Augustine's theology and philosophy, this is an excellent introduction to the bishop of Hippo Regius. For those who are familiar with Augustine, or even specialize in him, this is still a helpful text. As Augustine's thought goes both far and wide, Harrison illustrates the connections between them, as well as helping the experienced reader see elements of Augustine's thought that he/she may not be familiar with.
As a warning, though - one should not take this text as exhaustive. So, for instance, on Augustine's political theory and views on coercion, Harrison gives some pages to this, but only hinting at its complexity. Certainly, this says nothing bad about her book - one can't address everything in 220 pages. But it is a caution.
One other note. One sees, at times, "context" used in as a codeword for "postmodern" or the like. Thankfully, this book is spared that nonsense. Harrison's book is solid, well-versed in primary and secondary literature, and not pedantic. Highly recommended.

Does not teach you anything about HOW to create stories

OK .. here goes, this is my first really negative review on Amazon but I do feel it's important to be truthful.

Firstly, I believe in the power of story telling and how useful it is to tell a story that empowers an individual, so I was excited when I heard about this book.

Lisa spends most of her time telling you WHY story telling is important (very repetitively) but doesn't go into any depth about HOW TO construct a good story or how to work with clients or yourself on creating a transformative story.

It's full of stories to fill the spaces, most of them are meaningless .... more like sketches from a personal diary.

If you are looking for a book to learn from, this is not the one.

And what's with the positive reviews? They are what influenced me to buy this book. Waste of money.

I wanted to like this book a lot more than I was able to. It is strong on why stories work and there are some great stories in the book. The part I missed was how to choose or develop a story for your client and how to be an effective storyteller.

This story of love starts with a failed life plan and a sick father. That's how Helen Whicker finds herself back in her hometown of Portstown, Illinois, living with her parents and working as an obit writer for the town paper. Throw in a car accident and a neurotic sister-in-law, and Helen's life is pretty much a disaster.

Benson McCormick is just what she needs to turn things around. He's funny, uses foul language even more than she does, and he can't seem to get enough of Helen. But they live in different cities, and they both have family drama and relationship baggage.

Helen's gotten used to life on her own, but as she faces her worst fears, she wonders if she's really been living at all. The more she gets to know Benson, the more she believes that falling in love is the sweetest possible surrender. She just has to decide if she's strong enough to survive the fall.

Was good until almost the end

This had a great start but it ending felt flat and weak.

On her way to her parent's house, Helen gets into an accident with Benson. Helen is going to home to stay with her family because her father is sick. Benson is in the same town as Helen because his sister in-law is sick. Helen and Benson begin a relationship which I think is very sweet and romantic. It is insta-attraction, but not insta-love. It had points in a story that I love, but it failed me.

My issues were that after Helen sees Benson holding his pregnant ex-wife's hand in the auditorium, there is no big explanation. The kid is not his. Helen may have originally run, but I felt like she was the one asking for them to get back together. I still have no idea why he was holding his ex's hand. Benson said it was not what it seemed...whatever that means. I like some angst, but with the angst must come some groveling and there really was none. I don't think he even said I am sorry when he came to her house. My opinion of Helen changed at that point.

Also, I felt as if the first 8% of the book was a lot of unnecessary detail. The ending felt rushed and epilogue was weak. I barely read the epilogue. I lost my connection when I felt Helen was the one accepting things without a clear explanation. This is the way I perceived the story. You may have seen it a different way. Reading is subjective. You may love this book.

"This isn't a love story. It's a story about love." Yes it is, it truly is. And even though it is also listed as being included in the New Adult & College genre, IT'S NOT WHINY!

This is a well-written story about regular people living their lives, dealing with some of the same types of stuff as many of us. No billionaires, no SEALS, no murderous villians, just everyday people. Oh, and only one instance of invisible sex (they woke up together).

The main character, Helen, is in an introspective phase of her life as well she should be. It is a point in her life where a lot is going on, accidents, illnesses, real people life. Thankfully author Hunter J. Keane gave us a character you can believe is a real person, one that doesn't make you seriously worry about the future of the world (I can't tolerate reading about any more self-absorbed airheads).

I didn't expect to like this book as much as I did.

The Sweet Surrender

Well another free read I found on Amazon well worth the read. Both Helen and Benton have had struggles with love and they have a funny meet. They run into each other again in Helen's hometown where she is home helping take care of her sick father. Benton is in town helping his brother with his sick wife. There are some tears and tragedy in this book but it is truly about love- love of your family and falling in love with someone when you least expect it. Truly a great read.
