Practical, Poetic, and Down to Earth Psychology

The book is a series of short condensed essays about the essentials of taking charge of your life and making it work. The book is very basic in a good way and has a poetic and contemplative feel to it. The book would be a good support for psychotherapy. It does not waste words but gets to the point. "Protect us from the power of victims" was an eye opener for me when I read it a long time ago and showed me how things are not always as they seem. The book starts with how we need to make decisions and how we reveal ourselves through our decisions. There are a lot of quotables like "How you feel about yourself throughout the day is life itself". There are some useful questions to ask yourself so that you can "introduce yourself to yourself". All in all, the book is a relatively quick and worthwhile read that will help you take charge of your life. It probably will not solve all your problems, but it will probably make them seem more manageable.

Recognizing what you have control over and acting on that information can lead to fulfillment and satisfaction. All decisions are consequential in some way. The authors tell us "Making a decision is telling people who you are." You are revealed through the decisions you make.
Toward the middle of the book they discuss having an internal dialogue with yourself to determine who you really are. This is designed to help you evaluate which goals you consider to be worth pursuing. Living life is much more rewarding that simply passively existing. They note, "To be passively involved during most of your leisure time in fantasies--your own or somebody else's--could mean that your life is lacking in real satisfaction."
A person "creates" his or her own life by the decisions made on a daily basis. The mental choices lead to actions, actions lead to experiences, and cumulatively life progresses. Readers are encouraged to confront and overcome any mental assumptions that hold them back from living life the way it was meant to be lived.

About the Author
Father Gregory Boyle�was ordained�a Jesuit priest in 1982.�He�received his Master of Divinity from the Weston School of Theology and a Sacred Theology Masters degree from the Jesuit School of Theology. In 1988, Father Boyle began what would become Homeboy Industries, now located in downtown Los Angeles. Fr. Greg received the California Peace Prize, the “Humanitarian of the Year” Award from Bon App�tit; the Caring Institute’s 2007 Most Caring People Award; and�received the 2008 Civic Medal of Honor from the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce.

Every human being should read this book

It's about what it means to be human, to seek the goodness within ourselves and everyone and everything around us. It is thoroughly entertaining, instructional, thought-provoking, inspirational, faith-restoring... I am halfway through the book and torn between devouring the rest in one sitting or drawing it out as long as possible. It's one of those books that you know you will be sad when you reach the end because you loved it so much.

A Spiritual Classic!

I heard Fr. Greg Boyle speak a few years ago at a conference in Los Angeles and he is without question the best speaker I have ever heard. What is so impressive about his faith journey is that it is lived. The stories of human transformation described in the book are some of the most moving and inspiring spiritual narratives that I have encountered. At a time when it is so easy to become so cynical about institutional faith his writing breaks through with a spiritual force that reminds us of true meaning of faith.

Whenever Fr. quotes one of the "homies," I cannot help but cry. The simple yet deep wisdom they speak makes this very slow and prayerful reading. I have to stop and meditate. It is hard only because I also want to rush through the pages. The writing is fascinating and inspired! It's on my kindle, but know it's a book I want on my shelves. This is gospel!

Also included is Abraham Flexner’s 1939 essay “The Usefulness of Useless Knowledge,” which originally prompted Ordine to write this book. Flexner—a founder and the first director of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton—offers an impassioned defense of curiosity-driven research and learning.

Nuccio Ordine is a professor of Italian Literature at the University of Calabria and one of the world’s leading experts on the Italian Renaissance and the philosopher Giordano Bruno. He has taught at Yale, New York University, the Sorbonne, the Ecole Normale Supérieure Paris, and the Warburg Institute London, among others. Professor Ordine has been named a Knight of the French Legion of Honour, a Knight Commander of the Republic of Italy, and given an honorary membership in the Russian Academy of Sciences. His books have been translated into twenty languages.

Abraham Flexner (1866–1959) was an educator and reformer whose work helped transform higher education throughout North America. He was the founding Director of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ, one of the world’s leading centers for intellectual inquiry and research.

Great advice

This is so helpful! Finally, a book about improving memory that doesn't just focus on all the science behind it so much that it fails to deliver some strategies behind them, leaving the reader without retaining anything of any importance and with no solid techniques.
I've read so many memory books that just seem to be filled with useless information that is so boring that even with the most sophisticated technique it would still be near impossible to retain, the only thing I remember about these other books are how useless they are! This definitely isn't the case with this book, it covers so many bases while being entertaining at the same time - it actually kept me engaged the whole way throughout and I really can say I learned some great techniques and a good background behind memory. This read is really easy to understand and packed full of useful information, I really think that anyone could learn something by reading this.

A method that works

Back in high school I studies pretty well and was alway a high achiever. I however, left thigh school 10 years ago and have not studied since. I am due to start college soon and finally do a Computer Science degree however my study retention is not what it used to be. I have read other books previously on memory improvement and had little or no success with any of them. This one takes a completely different approach to all the others I have tried and most importantly this one actually works if you implement it.

Overall an excellent book that really will improve your memory. Highly recommended.

A different take on improving your memory. Rather than being about pure memory improvement, the author offers a different approach. It puts alot of focus into controlling what you need to remember and tapping into the original need for our memory, survival. The later book offers some well-known methods of improving your memory through daily training.

Must have for your library

Nancy Lee's new target volume delineation is a resource that all residents and perhaps all radiation oncologists should have at their disposal. This book is an expansion of the previous edition with extensive updates:

Contouring atlases for ALL body sites, chapters by various authors
Examples for multiple stages of disease
Text explaining contouring and rationale
Tables of CTV and PTV expansion definitions
Tables of dosimetric constraints for each site

The textbook contains instructions for planning based on atlases, protocols, institutional experience, and expert opinion. Multiple examples with different stages are provided. The expert opinion sections are shown for cases such as extensive disease or cranial nerve invasion for head and neck. Quite a bit of resources are quoted and references are included for recommended reading. A strength of the text lies in that it is not over-confident or religious: it is stated in many sections that variations are acceptable. For example, Nancy Lee's head and neck chapters are very courteous in that she provides her choice doses but also goes on to outline other methods of doing things. Advanced techniques such as hypofractionation and SIB are outlined for various body sites.

There are a few areas that the text could improve:

Some images are too small or poor quality and their contours are difficult to see. Looks like someone's spell check didn't get to the images - they can have the occasional typo.

The prostate chapter could use improvement. The author is from MSKCC and outlines only their method, one that few institutions use. Standard dosing and some SIB suggestions for pelvis and node positive would have been nice to see.

Nodes in the gastric cancer section are confusing the way they are labeled

In a few instances what is done in a picture differs slightly from what is described in the text. This also serves however to show that variations in practice are acceptable.

The breast chapter could use some more detailed explanations on how to go about contouring the breast and nodes, as these descriptions differ slightly in different atlases. The breast chapter could also use some more text on planning and some more details on breast reconstruction inflated vs deflated. The breast chapter has some helpful IMRT technique descriptions.

Others have mentioned there are some problems with the index. I have never used the index. The table of contents is labeled well enough for me.

An index of dosimetric constraints would be a nice addition in future editions

The downsides to the text make this book 4.5 stars at the worst, which still rounds up to 5 stars.

All in all, this is an excellent text I believe all should have.

Skillful & Inventive

This juicy book is 22 pages of text explaining why there is no text, 180 pages of inventive drawings that invite the viewer to juxtapose the relationship. For someone who draws this is `pure looking' and seeing what's around them. A lexicon of beauty and styles that shape questions about our perceptions and why we choose to look at particular scenes. When you think, `I just don't know what to draw?'

Milton Galser is classic fun

The interview in the beginning gives an amazing insight and account into Glaser's progress as a visual explorer. He's accomplished so much in his life with a myriad of techniques and clients, yet he's still experimenting, which is the fun part of trying to figure out the story and narrative of his visual sequence. Very cool.

About the Author
Gord Stellick is one of Canada's best-knownsports personalities, on both sides of the cameras and microphones. He began working with the Toronto Maple Leafs part-time in 1975 at the age of 18. He rose through the organization to become Assistant to the General Manager, then Assistant GM, and ultimately General Manager of the Leafs in 1988. To this day, he remains the youngest GM in NHL history (30 years old when he assumed the position). After 16 months as Leafs GM, he became Assistant GM for the New York Rangers for two years.
Stellick returned to Toronto in 1991, and has been on the media side ever since. He was the colour commentator on all Leaf radio broadcasts from 1991 to 1995, and a member of the Leafs game broadcast team from 1995 to 1998 on CHCH-TV. He was a hockey analyst at The Score (formerly Headline Sports) before joining Rogers' Sportsnet in 2002. He has hosted sports radio talk shows on the FAN 590 since 1993. As well he is a hockey insider/analyst for the radio station, and hosted the pre- and post-game hockey broadcasts, Blue and White Tonight, on the FAN 590. He is the co-author of two hockey books, has appeared on CBC, Canada AM on CTV, CTV Newsnet, Sportsline on Global TV, and is in demand as an emcee or speaker at corporate and charity events.

Great resource, endless applications

This book is a must-have for anyone who considers themselves beyond an entry-level carpenter. A lot of the ideas, tips, and theories in the book build upon common practices, and most of the projects are a little more advanced than hanging a shelf. The book covers everything from planning the site for a new construction, to framing the walls and roof, installing siding and shingles, etc. But even as a first-timer, there is plenty of knowledge in this book for you.
My usage for this book has mostly been for cutting rafters, both on a jobsite and for a shed I just built. This book gives you detailed instructions for measuring and cutting rafters without getting into the painful details of a beginner's guide to carpentry. I was able to calculate everything quickly and precisely, and there was even a guide on how to build a time-saving template to lay out your rafters identically.
This is the 2nd time I have bought this book- I loaned my first copy to a coworker who didn't want to give it back! I told him Merry Christmas and bought another copy for myself. John Carroll definitely knows what he is talking about, and I appreciate his writing style.
For the record, I am a licensed residential contractor with 10 years of experience, and I still found this book helpful. This was not written so advanced that the beginner won't understand- I think it is very clear and concise, and will give people a better understanding of the more technical side of the job.

Solid from the ground up.

I wish I'd had this book a long time ago. Granted, a lot of the knowledge and practice in here is stuff you will pick up on the job-site, but probably some time after you could've used it. After a brief introduction, the author follows the construction process from foundation to roof, providing a wealth of mistake saving and even mistake correcting information. Confidence is essential to planning, executing and efficiently completing any project and this book delivers just that. It should be considered absolutely essential for those seeking to become proficient builders, whether professional or not. If I believed in employees, I'd make sure they all had a copy and I'd pay them to read it. The basics of tool selection and use, practical accuracy, and formulas are included with a lot of tips, tricks and explanations. I intend to make this book mandatory reading for my sons, it will save me a lot of time teaching, and save them a few years of correcting blunders.
