Late Victorian Holocausts: El Nio Famines and the Making of the Third World, by Mike Davis

Bestselling, magisterial melding of global environmental history and global political history. Winner of the World History Association Book Award.

Examining a series of El Niño-induced droughts and the famines that they spawned around the globe in the last third of the 19th century, Mike Davis discloses the intimate, baleful relationship between imperial arrogance and natural incident that combined to produce some of the worst tragedies in human history.

Late Victorian Holocausts focuses on three zones of drought and subsequent famine: India, Northern China; and Northeastern Brazil. All were affected by the same global climatic factors that caused massive crop failures, and all experienced brutal famines that decimated local populations. But the effects of drought were magnified in each case because of singularly destructive policies promulgated by different ruling elites.

Davis argues that the seeds of underdevelopment in what later became known as the Third World were sown in this era of High Imperialism, as the price for capitalist modernization was paid in the currency of millions of peasants’ lives.

From Publishers Weekly
While this book will not have the impact of Davis's City of Quartz--a scathing indictment of L.A.'s environmental ravagement, economic disparity and racial divides--in a perfect world, it would. Its subject is nothing less than the creation of what we now call "The Third World," through a complex series of seemingly disparate natural and market-related events beginning in the 1870s. Davis dives into the data and journalism of the period with a vengeance, showing that the seemingly unprecedented droughts across northern Africa, India and China in the 1870s and 1890s are consistent with what we now know to be El Ni¤o's effects, and that it was political and market forces (which are never impersonal, Davis insists), and not a lack of potential stores and transportation, that kept grain from the more than 50 million people who starved to death. Chapters brilliantly reconstruct the political, economic, ecological and racial climate of the time, as well as the horrific deaths by hunger and thirst that besieged the peasantries of the afflicted c0untries. As in City of Quartz, Ecology of Fear and Magical Urbanism, Davis's synthetic powers, rendering mountains of data into an accessible and cogent form, are matched by his acid castigations of the murders and moral failings that have attended the advance of capitalism, and by cogent detours into the work of journalists and theorists who have come before him, decrying injustice and rallying the opposition. (Feb.)Forecast: Although this book's historical subject seems vastly removed from contemporary American life, it may get some media attention for its El Ni¤o-based arguments. City of Quartz still guarantees review attention for any Davis project, which may draw history buffs who haven't heard of him. His substantial core readership will seek out the book either way, and the book's synthesis of hardcore data will also hold appeal for poli-sci syllabi and university libraries.

Review
“Davis has given us a book of substantial contemporary relevance as well as great historical interest … this highly informative book goes well beyond its immediate focus.”
—Amartya Sen, New York Times

“Davis’s range is stunning … He combines political economy, meteorology, and ecology with vivid narratives to create a book that is both a gripping read and a major conceptual achievement. Lots of us talk about writing ‘world history’ and ‘interdisciplinary history’: here is the genuine article.”
—Kenneth Pomeranz, author of The Great Divergence

“The global climate meets a globalizing political economy, the fundamentals of one clashing with the fundamentalisms of the other. Mike Davis tells the story with zest, anger, and insight.”
—Stephen J. Pyne, author of World Fire

“Davis, a brilliant maverick scholar, sets the triumph of the late-nineteenth-century Western imperialism in the context of catastrophic El Niño weather patterns at that time ... This is groundbreaking, mind-stretching stuff.”
—Independent

“Late Victorian Holocausts will redefine the way we think about the European colonial project. After reading this, I defy even the most ardent nationalist to feel proud of the so-called ‘achievements’ of empire.”
—Observer

“Devastating.”
—San Francisco Chronicle

“Generations of historians largely ignored the implications [of the great famines of the late nineteenth century] and until recently dismissed them as ‘climatic accidents’ … Late Victorian Holocausts proves them wrong.”
—Los Angeles Times (Best Books of 2001)

“Wide ranging and compelling … a remarkable achievement.”
—Times Literary Supplement

“A masterly account of climatic, economic and colonial history.”
—New Scientist

“A hero of the Left, Davis is part polemicist, part historian, and all Marxist.”
—Dale Peck, Village Voice

“The catalogue of cruelty Davis has unearthed is jaw-dropping … Late Victorian Holocausts is as ugly as it is compelling.”
—Sukhdev Sandhu, Guardian

“Controversial, comprehensive, and compelling, this book is megahistory at its most fascinating—a monument to times past, but hopefully not a predictor of future disasters.”
—Foreign Affairs

“Devastating.”
—San Francisco Chronicle

sui generis
By P. Hung
A sui generis history of mysterious meteorological cycles, the impact of international market integration on agrarian societies, and the tragedy of 30 to 60 million starved dead whose absence as an accumulated population from collective memory belies their importance in the scope of Europe's imperial ambitions. Harrowing, terrifying, important, and I hope not a harbinger of climate change impacts on global food security.

Climate change in the real world
By Richard Reese (author of Understanding Sustainability)
In the years 1876-1879 and 1896-1902 between 12.2 and 29.3 million died of famine in India. In the years 1876-1879 and 1896-1900 between 19.5 and 30 million died of famine in China. In the same period, an estimated 2 million died in Brazil. Famine hit these three nations the hardest, but many other nations were also affected. In the US, churches organized to send relief to hungry farmers in the Dakotas and western Kansas.

Mike Davis wrote about these famines in his book Late Victorian Holocausts. The famines occurred in regions slammed by severe drought. The droughts have been linked to the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a major factor in global weather patterns.

Droughts have been common throughout history, and agricultural societies have commonly prepared for them by creating emergency reserves of stored grain. Because of political shifts in many regions, these safety nets were in poor condition during the late Victorian droughts. In the wake of the Industrial Revolution came a new mode of economic thinking that frowned on setting aside significant wealth for insurance against disaster. It was more profitable to sell the grain today, pocket the cash, and worry about tomorrow's problems tomorrow. Peasants were expendable.

The Qing dynasty in China believed that subsistence was a human right, and it had relief management systems in place to reduce the toll of famines during drought years or floods. By the late Victorian era, conflicts with colonial powers had drained the wealth of the Qing government, so it was incapable of effectively responding to the catastrophic droughts.

Prior to the British colonization of India, the Moguls had a similar system for responding to famine. The British, on the other hand, were cruel masters (as they had been during the 1845 famine in Ireland). Food was widely available, but few could afford the inflated prices. While millions were starving, they exported Indian wheat. They outlawed donations of private relief. They forbid the Pariahs from foraging for forest foods, leading to 155,000 deaths. They created relief camps where the starving received inadequate rations, and 94 percent died. Very civilized chaps, eh?

The hungry hordes in Brazil were the victims of their own corrupt government, which had disposed of grain reserves. Brazil was not a colony of Britain, but English investors and creditors played a powerful role in the economy, turning Brazil into an "informal colony" that was kept permanently in debt.

Davis argued that the millions of deaths were largely a deliberate "holocaust" rather than a spell of bad luck, because political actions were a primary factor behind the high mortality rates. He also argued that this holocaust played a role in the creation of the Third World. In the eighteenth century, Europe did not have the highest standard of living. The biggest manufacturing districts were in India and China. Their workers ate better, had lower unemployment, and often earned more than workers in Europe. Literacy rates were higher, including women.

One of Davis's primary objectives was to spank capitalism, colonialism, and the hideous overseers of the British Empire. There has been lively discussion in the reader feedback at Amazon, and a number of critics have questioned the way in which Davis assigned blame for the massive famines. For me, the book had important messages: (1) Droughts happen. (2) Agricultural societies are highly vulnerable to droughts. (3) Famines commonly follow droughts. (4) Famines can be horrific.

When rains ended an Indian drought in 1878, the mosquito population exploded, and hundreds of thousands of malnourished survivors died of malaria. Meanwhile, locusts gobbled up the growing young plants. Hungry peasants murdered many creditors who threatened foreclosure. Then came gangs of armed tax collectors. Hungry wild animals became very aggressive, dragging away the weak, screaming. In the Madras Deccan, "the only well-fed part of the local population were the pariah dogs, `fat as sheep,' that feasted on the bodies of dead children."

In China, the flesh of the starved was sold at markets for four cents a pound. People sold their children to buy food. Husbands ate their wives. Parents ate their children. Children ate their parents. Thousands of thieves were executed. At refugee camps, many perished from disease. If too many refugees accumulated, they were simply massacred. In some regions, relief took more than a year to arrive.

Davis's vivid and extensive descriptions of famine times remind an increasingly obese society that we are living in a temporary and abnormal bubble of cheap and abundant calories. Importantly, he puts a human face on the consequences of climate change, a subject usually presented in purely abstract form: parts per million, degrees Celsius, and colorful computer-generated charts, graphs, and maps.

Near the end of the book, Davis gives us a big, fat, juicy discussion on the history of agriculture and ecological catastrophe in China. People who remain in denial about the inherent destructiveness of agriculture typically point to China as a glowing example of 4,000 years of happy sustainable low-impact organic farming. Wrong, wrong, wrong! This chapter provides a powerful cure for those who suffer from such embarrassing naughty fantasies.

The late Victorian droughts happened at a time when the world population was less than 1.4 billion. Today, it's over 7 billion, and growing by 70 million per year. Cropland area per capita is shrinking, and soil health is diminishing. Energy prices are rising, and water usage for irrigation is foolishly unsustainable. We're getting close to Peak Food. World grain production per capita peaked in 1984, at 342 kilograms per person. World grain stocks (stored grain) peaked in 1986, and have been declining since then.

On 24 July 2012, the venerable Lester Brown of the Earth Policy Institute published a warning in The Guardian. "The world is in serious trouble on the food front." World grain stocks are currently "dangerously low." "Time is running out. The world may be much closer to an unmanageable food shortage -- replete with soaring food prices, spreading food unrest, and ultimately political instability -- than most people realize."

For me, the main message of this book was a powerful warning about the huge risks of agriculture, and its insanely destructive companion, overpopulation. The famines discussed in this book were not a freak event in history. Famine has been a common, normal, periodic occurrence in virtually all agricultural societies, from the Cradle of Civilization to today.

As the collapse of industrial civilization proceeds and life slows down, opportunities to live more in balance with nature will emerge. Clever societies will carefully limit population size, and phase out their dependence on farming. Un-clever societies will continue to breed like there's no tomorrow, beat their ecosystems to death, and hippity-hop down the Dinosaur Trail.

The History of a Not So Natural Disaster
By Lionel S. Taylor
So much of the history of the third world just presents the desperate living conditions as something that has always existed in that part of the world and always will. It is so well know and described that it is just assumed that there is nothing that can be done about it and that it is the fault of the tropical environment and the backwards people that live in it. Davis's Late Victorian Holocausts shows that this is not the case at all. Yes there have been devastating long-term droughts and excessive rainfall that has made farming and life in general very difficult in these areas. But it is not acts of God that deserve the blame for the wide spread deaths in these areas. As Davis argues very clearly these societies have dealt with droughts and monsoons for centuries and had an infrastructure set up to deal with it. This infrastructure was dismantled (more often than not deliberately) by imperial forces that set up a system for maximum wealth extraction from these regions. As Davis demonstrates especially in the case of India, the development that was done was not done for the benefit of the people but rather for the extraction of wealth. Late Victorian Holocausts also does a very good job of debunking assumptions that China and India are burdened by their excessive populations and that this is to blame for most of their economic underdevelopment. But the fact is these countries have dealt with these issues for a long time and had the infrastructure to deal with it.
Davis does an excellent job of opening the book with an interesting and relevant antecedent of former president Grant's travels thorough some of the drought stricken areas. And while the book is an academic book, it is well written and is not a bad read for the general reader either. If there was one complaint that I had about the book it is that the 3rd part dealing with deciphering El Nino climate patterns was way too much and really not relevant to the rest of the book. If the author's main argument is that the main source of the famine problems was manmade policy decisions rather than climate, why bother spending 40 pages on an exhaustively detailed description of how El Nino was discovered. In fact, after discussing it in those sections it is only referred to in passing thorough out the rest of the book. I would recommend that unless you are just fascinated with climate science you just skim this section it will not take away from the overall argument of the book. This one shortcoming aside this is a fascinating and well written book and I definitely recommend it.

Astrology Plus (Original Hilarion Series Book 7), by Hilarion

Astrology Plus, channeled from the Ascended Master Hilarion, explains how Astrology works and gives the meanings of the planets in the signs and houses of Astrology. These meanings bear amazing insight and clarity into the lessons and destiny of each soul walking the Earth today.

Much of what Hilarion says parallels what can be ascertained from traditional Astrological sources, although Hilarion gives the very specific karmic lesson and significance behind those traditional understandings.

Other portions of this material contain insights which could never be deduced from the symbolism of traditional Astrology.

In the Introduction to this book the medium for Hilarion, Maurice Cooke, gives a helpful explanation of the basics of Astrology. He shares how Hilarion’s intention was to provide a source of Astrological information which could be read by the general public and not only by those who are serious students of Astrology.

0Present day Astrologers are aware that between 2012 and 2015 the planets Uranus and Pluto will square each other seven times. They have all noted the transformation and upheaval of old established structures and belief systems this has entailed, and is likely to continue to entail.

Uranus, the planet of the unusual and different, of sudden change out of the blue, and of freedom from old patterns that have outlived their purpose is also the planet which traditionally rules the Science of Astrology.

We at Marcus Books have sensed how this re-publication of Astrology Plus, with perhaps an even wider public dissemination of its contents than previously took place, could in itself serve as a Plutonian/Uranian shake-up/transformation of established schools of contemporary Astrological understandings.

As Hilarion himself has stated:

This has never been revealed to mankind hitherto. But time has turned again to a new Age. The cycle of Aquarius is about to begin, and man is at last ready to understand truths additional to those he has already been given.

Great book on astrology. Very concise and straight to the point. Having read a few books on introduction to astrology this one is by far the best, it gives you an approach and information that I didn't find in the other ones. The only thing you need to know is which planet is in which sign and in which house in your astral chart, and you will get a very valuable information out of it. Also very spiritual in nature. Highly recommended.

I was encouraged to get this book recently. It is not profound as I was led to believe. Completely basic book about astrology. So if your at the beginning of your education you could get it. I'm not. I didn't find it intriguing or very educational at all. It is not inspiring in my opinion. I have many astrology books that are far more deep and in tune.

Better than the First!
By SciFiChick
John Smith (Number Four) narrowly escaped the death in Paradise, Ohio. Now, on the run with Sam and Number Six, the trio must find the rest of the remaining six of nine alien survivors in order to fight the impending invasion. Meanwhile, Number Seven is hiding out in Spain, but the Magadorians are closing in. And her protector seems to have turned her back on their past and purpose.

Picking up right after I am Number Four left off, this sequel revolves mainly around two characters: John Smith again and Marina (Number Seven). John, Sam, and Six become closer as they travel across America, which leads to an obvious and awkward love triangle. We get to learn more about Six and her tortured past. And we're also introduced to the young and sheltered Marina, who has been hiding out all over Europe, but has been living in Spain in an orphanage a bit too long. With her protector in denial, Marina doesn't know who she can trust now. But she knows she has to leave as soon as possible.

I thoroughly enjoyed I am Number Four; and was surprised that this second installment was even more intense and action-packed than the first. Filled with shocking twists and surprises around every corner, the story was riveting. With interesting characters that are easy to care about and a complex and engaging story, this science fiction, action thriller for young adults is pure fun and excitement.

A Thrilling Sequel to I Am Number 4
By Mundie Moms & Mundie Kids Book Reviews
This is a fantastic, action packed, thrilling sequel to I Am Number 4. I really liked the way the story played out and was written. It's a fast paced, engaging read told from two different points of view from John, Number Four and Marina, Number Seven.

John, Six, Sam and John's faithful companion, Bernie Kosar are on the run and continue to find themselves in the middle of trouble, despite their best efforts to stay hidden. I loved their character chemistry together and even found some their lines together humorous. Parelling their story is Number Seven, Marina who's in Spain. I liked getting to see two completely different sides to their stories, which not only allows the reader to get to know the characters more, but it makes the story more believable being set in both the US and Spain.

I absolutely love Number Six. She continues to be my favorite character in the series, but Marina herself proves to be a pretty strong character. Sam is another favorite of mine and he becomes a lot stronger in this sequel. I adore John and his sarcasm. He brings some of the humor to the storyline. The fabulous twist that's thrown into John and Sarah's relationship is one I did not see coming. It's one that had me going "no way". I'm hoping we get to see the reasoning behind this twist in the next book.

Thrown into this exiting storyline is the character's history. I liked being able to understand why they're here. The only thing I had an issue with is the reference to the author's pen name and how it ties back to their history. For some reason it just rubbed me the wrong way that one of their Elders has the same name. Aside from that, I liked how the story played out. There's a lot that happens in The Power of Six. There's a lot of action, betrayal, and new characters that come into play that make this book an extremely engaging, fun read. I highly recommend picking this book up.

Infuriating (Many many many Spoilers)
By Amazon Customer
OK, I saw the movie of the first book and really liked it. So I then started reading the series. I didn't write a review on the first book (I Am Number Four) but would give it 4 stars. Definitely good enough to keep on going though, unlike the movie, there's a lot more of the mopey love stuff going on. But the second book has been a complete disappointment. I realize that I seem to be in the minority but I just don't understand how this book has so many 5 star reviews.

This book has alternating viewpoints between John (Four) and Marina (Seven). Marina is at an orphanage in Spain. Her story is interesting and quite good. I enjoyed her parts quite a bit.

However, John has to be the most unrelatable frustrating protagonist I've ever had the misfortune to read. In the first book, he falls head-over-heels in love with Sarah. Can't live without her. Now, he's been gone from Sarah for a few days and he's falling for Six. OK, well, fickle guy is fickle. I can accept that I guess. But he also knows that his best, and only, friend Sam likes Six as well. So does he hide his feelings for Six, at least while Sam is around? Nope. At one point (near the end) he has to say goodbye to Six and, while Sam is watching, starts Frenching her. Nice.

OK, now I'm gritting my teeth, but fine, I'll accept that he really is falling for Six and can't help himself. He really likes her so, being the protagonist, I'm sure he'll be by her side instantly if she's in trouble? Nope. The second he realizes he's anywhere near Sarah's house he runs off, leaving Six by herself, surrounded by Mogs, fighting to get HIS Chest back. Yes, you read that correctly. She has put her life on the line to get John's Chest back from the Mogs and is fighting them when John decides it's time to run off and hook up with his other girlfriend. Mind you, Sarah is sound asleep at home and doesn't even know John is back in town, John is the #1 Most Wanted Man in the country, Mogs are beating up Six, the FBI and CIA have been pulling out all the stops to get John, but at this exact time he decides to pay a social call on Sarah. What. The. Fudge.

Naturally, really bad things happen because of John's stupid decision. He and Sam (you know, his best friend that he has no respect for but keeps dragging along to get in trouble with him) are captured by the government. Six rescues John (again, as she did in book one) just as the Mogs attack the jail that he and Sam are being held in (I'll come back to the Mogs in a minute).

The trio escape from the jail. Six informs them that they need to get to Spain to help Seven, who is in some deep doodoo. John, who is deeply remorseful for putting Six and Sam in jeopardy and really wants to find and help his fellow Lorians, of course agrees to help. No wait. Sorry, that was some other book that makes sense. In this particular book, John decides he HAS to get his Chest back. You know, the one he forgot all about so he could text with Sarah while Six was fighting to get it back for him. That Chest. It's being held in a huge Mog lair so naturally he drags Sam along with him, why not, and abandons Six to whatever fate awaits her in Spain. I stopped reading at this point. I really just couldn't continue.

After many hours of debate I did decide to finally finish reading solely to see what happens to Marina and Six. Again, that part of the story is pretty good.

You won't be surprised to learn that John does not pay a price for his stupid decision. Sam does. Sam is captured and tortured by the Mogs. Good one John.

Finally, three other minor points, none of which on their own are deal breakers for me.

One, the Mogs seem to be the Lorien Legacies' equivalent of the Imperial Troopers in Star Wars. No matter how many of them there are, you can be sure they won't be able to stop our fearless heroes. John, Six, Sam and Marina and her friends mow down literally hundreds, if not thousands, of them. This is only a minor quibble on my part. They are the good guys after all and I'm used to reading and watching stuff like that. Also, there are hints that they are in collusion with the US government. If that is the case, why did they need to attack the jail? Just get the feds to hand John and Sam over to them.

Two, when John tries to go back into the Mog lair to rescue Sam (at least he tries, I guess) there is a blue force field that he can't get past. Where was that force field when he and Sam first snuck in? It seems a bit too convenient that it wasn't there when they needed to get in and then shows up when the plot needs it to keep Sam in Mog hands.

Three, recycling of powers. I haven't mentioned it, but while in the Mog base, John and Sam rescue Number Nine. He has all kinds of cool powers. Once John and he escape the cave, and after John knocks himself out by running into the blue force field (typical), Nine all of a sudden develops the ability to talk to animals. What?! I thought this was one of John's signature abilities. This seemed completely unnecessary.

OK, so that's that. I can't read the third book right now. I'm interested in Six and Marina but I just can't read anymore about John. I'll wait and see what others say about the fourth book when it comes out. If John gets better in that, then I'll continue but for now I'm holding off.

What I Learned About Cuba , by Going To Cuba, by Mr. Antonio R. Zamora

This book is about one man's trips to Cuba and about the relationship between the United States and the island nation. Since his first trip back to the homeland in 1995, he has been back to Cuba more than forty times, travelling not only under specific licenses to attend meetings and conferences, but also under a general licenses to conduct professional research, as well as family visits. It is unusual for a Cuban American to travel to Cuba so often, more so because of Antonio Zamora's age and political background. As a result of his trips he has accumulated a wealth of knowledge well worth sharing. In the months and years ahead, the discussion in the United States on what to do about Cuba is certain to increase significantly. This book provides important answers to the reality of Cuba and U.S. policy.

If U.S. Citizen's had the freedom to travel to Cuba we'd all learn something!
By Informed Opinion
Anthony Zamora has written one of the most concise and well researched books on Cuba available in the US. His own personal history is well credentialed and his 'evolution' is a compelling testimony to the nuances and dynamics at work in what to most people, is an 'incomprehensible' policy. I can't recommend this book enough, and in fact will to anyone interested in US-Cuba relations.

There is NO honorable reason why the US should not open normal diplomatic relations with Cuba which would offer both parties a proper channel for dialogue on bilateral interests and conflict resolution. That is if the US had any honorable intentions towards Cuba, or were an honest broker for the well being of the Cuban people.

The US has Cuba on the list of 'states that sponsor terrorism' which is absurd, to demonize and vilify the Cuban government and justify its policy at home and abroad, despite that policy being condemned as a 'crime against humanity' for over 22 years by the UN General Assembly. US policy on Cuba is one of the greatest impediments to US interests in Latin America and the Caribbean. 'Ordinary' US citizens are forbidden, criminalized (ten years in prison, $250,000 fine) to freely experience Cuba for themselves, even if they go from a third nation. If we did travel, we would learn Cuba is not an enemy, nor is its government, and this policy would be unsustainable.

Unlike the majority of us, Mr. Zamora is one of the 'privileged' people who can qualify for travel, and we see, through his eyes an evolving Cuba, which has accomplished many fundamental quality of life improvements for its citizenry.

The reality is the US has no intention of ever making peace with Cuba, Castro's or no Castros. It doesn't care if Cubans are rich or poor, anymore than we 'care' about the disenfranchised elsewhere, at home or abroad. Its objectives have been the same since the US first intervened in the Spanish American war, and gained Cuba as its first imperial conquest. Exploit Cuban resources for US interests, and use the Cuban Capitalist diaspora to help achieve those goals where possible.

Under Helms-Burton, which codified all previous measures of 'regime change' engagement is impossible until Cuba can be returned to serve in some capacity as a client state, open for exploitation to US markets.

That's what I have learned from my many, many unlicensed trips to Cuba beginning in 1971 to just got back.

I hope Mr. Zamora will continue to de-construct the stereotypic mythology of Cuba since only one narrative is generally available in mainstream media. Cuba is a complex society and in the process of change, but what shape that takes should be for the Cuban people to decide. Here in the US people should decide to regain their own fundamental freedom to see what they can learn from their own encounter with Cuba. We are a nation of hypocrites, in the 'land of the free' until we can travel freely to Cuba for ourselves.

By Babs
This is a good, fast read for anyone (and it should be everyone) who is interested in current Cuba. This was published in 2013, so it's relatively up to date. Zamora's writing is conversational and fluid (though the book does need another good proofreading - some spelling and punctuation errors, but that's okay). Zamora is one smart man with few illusions about his native country, his fellow exiles, especially in Miami, and his current country. He tells it like it is: "The reality is that U.S.-Cuba policy since 1980 is not based on the national interest of the United States but on the politics of the State of Florida," he writes, and it's more true today than it was when Zamora wrote it. He's insightful and funny, too: "The Cuban-Americans in Congress and their political allies in Florida have either never been to Cuba or their last taxi drive was more than fifty years ago." So many of us are traveling to Cuba now and seeing for ourselves that we've been fibbed to about that island, its people and its government for years. Zamora fills in the blanks for those of us who have been there, those who plan to go, and, perhaps most important, those who will never go see for themselves. This is an especially important book to read in light of the looming election. All the good work that's been done in regard to our relations with Cuba recently could be wiped out if certain people are voted into office.

Curious about a die-hard Cuban exile's reversal of thought.....
By Curiously Cuban
I am the child of Cuban immigrants, who came to the U.S. when I was three years old. I recently visited the island for the first time in over fifty years, and returned with an unbridled hunger to understand the many contradictions I saw and heard during my stay. Up until now, my understanding was based on a singular line of thought that had been perpetuated by family, friends, and acquaintances, most of whom live in California and South Florida. Typically that line of thinking was punctuated with the notion that anyone that challenged it was pro-Fidel, pro-Communism, and unsympathetic to the suffering of the diaspora. When I saw that Mr. Zamora not only was a member of that diaspora, but someone who had a change in thinking, I was compelled to get into his head to understand the reasons for his reversal. I'm still in the process of reading the book, but I am drawn in and will finish it quickly. The only thing standing between a 4- and 5-star review is pedantic in nature. It would have been a good idea if he had enlisted an editor to go through the grammar, punctuation, and spelling. That's not a deal breaker, though. I sort of felt as if I had been sitting in a coffee shop, drinking a "cortadito", listening to Mr. Zamora tell me his story, which makes those minor transgressions forgivable. My intentions for reading this are not political in nature, they are one of many channels I am currently taking to increase my understanding of a complex and sometimes mysterious story about the place where I was born, of which I had no personal memory save those that were told to me.

A Must Buy for all Ages
By This kid
Why I purchased: This is one of two books that I purchased of Calvin and Hobbes. I remember reading the same Calvin and Hobbes book over and over as a child whenever I stayed at my grandmother's, so as soon as I remembered that childhood memory, I knew I had to buy more. I remember enjoying these comics so much, laughing at jokes I didn't understand at the time, and I knew that I needed to grab hold of more of them, something I could not do at my young age.

What I love: I love how timeless and hilarious these jokes are! I didn't understand them when I was younger, and I remember pulling out the dictionary when I didn't know certain words, so I learned a bit for my young age. If you have never heard of these comics, you NEED to get this book! Yes, it's a comic, but to me, it's funnier than the Peanuts. I know lots of people disagree with me, but there's something sentimental and original about these comics. It couldn't hurt to try! Also, this book is cheaper here than in Barnes and Noble, so I totally recommend getting it here. Bill Watterson was a genius at his craft; you won't regret buying this book, especially if it's your first Calvin and Hobbes book.

What I don't love: There is nothing that I don't love!

Conclusion: If you have a young child starting to read, this is awesome. If you used to read these comics, get them again! It'll be like walking down memory lane; just do it, how could you regret rereading jokes that you probably have forgotten? The jokes are timeless, the vocabulary makes it interesting, and the jokes are hilarious. For new and old readers alike, if you don't own this book, you need to!

Charming, Funny, and Heart-Warming--Even for Adults
By justme
I caught several of these on "Daily Deals" the other day and I'm so glad I splurged and got them for myself. I laughed more reading this book than I've laughed in a long, long time. I love how it's easy to zoom in and out as needed, and slide the panels along. I thank the publisher for formatting that way from the bottom of my warm little heart, I bought myself a comic from one of the big names in publishing and couldn't do that with their book. :( My vision isn't perfect, so being able to zoom in and navigate is a pleasure ( I use an older Kindle 7" HDX). I do wish there was a way to bookmark favorite panels to revisit later, though. I'm very happy with this purchase. I enjoyed every minute with Calvin and Hobbes. I'm sure I'll enjoy the other books just as much. I love Calvin and Hobbes. :)

By Les
The choice of comic strips is obviously a personal one so I will only say that this is what I consider to be the second greatest comic strip series of all time with first being Bloom County. The Far Side is a cartoon so is in a different category to me.

The only real comment concerning the Kindle edition is neither pro nor con, simply something to consider and applies to all Kindle versions of this series. All of the individual strips are graphics and therefore the book size is significantly larger than what one would normally expect and occupies significant internal storage memory which is exacerbated by the fact that Kindle applications do not support external storage such as on USB or SD Card. This was a bit annoying as I had purchased several of these books but only was able to save two at a time and then had to delete from the device to get to the next two.

If one is attempting to acquire the entire series in hardcopy then one should consider The Complete Calvin and Hobbes series as it will be more complete.

This review was of Attack of the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons: A Calvin and Hobbes Collection for Kindle as sold directly from Amazon. I include this type of information as sometimes reviews of a different product or reseller appear in reviews.

"An exciting story about what really matters, Saving Mr. Terupt is warm, wise, and packed with hope."--JOAN BAUER, Newbery Honor Winner

The kids and their favorite teacher from Because of Mr. Terupt and Mr. Terupt Falls Again return for a third book in the funny, warmhearted series for fans of Wonder.

Seventh grade was going to be awesome. The only thing missing was Mr. Terupt.

The kids from Mr. Terupt’s fifth- and sixth-grade classes are entering their first year of junior high school. There’s a lot to be excited about, but there are new challenges, too. Peter and Jeffrey face tough competition on their wrestling team. Alexia has a disastrous first day of school, and that’s only the beginning. Anna is desperate for Charlie to propose to her mother—what is he waiting for?! Danielle isn’t feeling so well, but she's trying to tough it out, like Grandma. Trouble with a bully makes Luke dread going to school for the first time ever. And Jessica is waiting anxiously for an acceptance to a theater retreat in New York City.
Everyone is missing Mr. Terupt. When a fight threatens to break up the group forever, they think their favorite teacher is the only one who can help them. But the kids soon find out that it’s Mr. Terupt who needs saving.

This novel includes extra content in the back of the book. Readers will find a Junior High Survival Guide with tips from the old gang!

"This third in the series [is] as easy for new readers to pick up as it is for returning fans. A warmly gracious invitation to a convincing middle school world."--Kirkus Reviews

Perfect series for kids entering middle school
By Annie
My son loves all three books from this series. He is more of a nonfiction reader and I've tried, in the past, to get him interested in fiction. I had no luck until we stumbled upon the Mr. Terupt books. Perfect series for kids entering middle school. My son can relate to a lot of the characters and often talks to me about the books. He likes them so much he has reread all three of them this summer.

I bought the series for my son. I haven't read them... but my 11 year old son, who normally chooses captain underpants or diary of a wimpy kid type books, was hooked after the first book. He really loved the different characters and their stories and can't get enough of the books. He's actually even reread them a few times.

Wonderful Book!
By Dr. B.
The Mr. Terupt series was one of my 5th grade class' books for me to read to them. They were completely caught up by the real life description of each character. It's a good book to help teach life lessons to children as well.
