I want my money back!

The topic of the book is a great one; the contents however are useless. Had I known the authors were going to simply describe what most people already know about what it takes be a good speaker(have your ideas clear and organized, give examples and provide evidence of what you are talking about, tell people why they should listen to what you have to say, give a mind-blowing conclusion, etc.), I wouldn't have bought the book. I thought the book would contain more useable tips on "how to" be eloquent, as opposed to just describing the characteristics of eloquence. Seems to me that the book was only written as a bait to visit the authors' webpage and pay for other, hopefully more in-depth training courses.
Supporting evidence: page 607 (kindle version) talks about how the authors' "real" work includes coaching and videotaping customer service reps to help them appear more friendly and capable (now, that's cool); page 614 says something like "are you the type of person that is boring and frightening? Try smiling; are you the type of person that is friendly but gets no respect? Try giving firm handshakes" (duh!). As an alternative to this book, I recommend Carnegie's "how to win friends and influence people".

Good book, needed a little more

If you are trying to figure out how to generically structure your communications with others I think this book does a good job. I think it is especially useful for presentations.

Essentially, the book advocates 1. catching the readers attention, telling them what you're going to tell them, tell it to them, and then tell them what you told them - which is a good structure. The book also is quite succinct on how to execute on this structure. The problem I have is that this book doesn't deal with how to develop the content that will be integrated into this structure. I did expect the book to talk about how to select the points to discuss, how to structure each of those point for maximum effectiveness, etc. since I believe they are pretty important to speak clearly and concisely.

Overall this is a book that will help you get your point across...whether it will help the clarity and conciseness is another issue.

An excellent book on systems and whole systems thinking.

This is the last book written by Dr. Deming before his death in 1993 at the age of 93. Dr. Deming is perhaps best known for the work he did in Japan at the end of World War II, and his famous 14 points. In this book Dr. Deming introduces his System of Profound Knowledge, which consists of: An understanding of Systems,A Theory of Knowledge, An understanding of Variation and Psychology Dr. Deming defines a system as: "A series of interdependent components that try to work together to achieve the aim of the system." The system must have an aim, without an aim there is not system. Dr. Deming explains variation as follows: All systems have some variation in them. The secret is to know what kind of variation is occuring and to respond accordingly. Common cause variation is the random variation tha occurs in any system. Special cause variation is a result of something outside the system acting on the system. An example would be that it normally takes you 25 minutes to drive to work, give or take a few minutes, but this morning, because of an accident the commute required 50 minutes. The normal drive time, with variation represents common cause variation, while the accident represents special cause variation. A theory of Knowledge is a way of doing experiments, or defining a mind set. According to Dr. Deming without theory no learning takes place. He give an example of a rooster that has a theory that he causes the sun to rise because he gets up early and crows. One morning he forgets to crow. The sun rises anyway. While the rooster's theory is blown out of the water he has learned that he is not responsible for causing the sun to rise and in the future he can sleep in. Dr. Deming's discussion on psychology has to do with the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. His basic theory is that people enter the world motivated to learn and do well and that the excessive use of extrinsic motivation kills the intrinsic motivation. In this book Dr. Deming also discusses in some detail his famous Red Beads Experiment which he uses to demonstrate the power of systems and how they victimize the people working in them.

Shorter Deming book

W. Edwards Deming is the man who tried to tell America how to make industry more effective. Few listened, so he went to postwar Japan and revolutionized their industry instead. When American industrial leaders saw Japan beating them, then they got interested. Almost anything by Deming is a must-read for his commonsense but statistically-based theories for productive, happy work. The New Economics is pretty short but introduces a lot of the points. For the in-depth view, read his Out of The Crisis.

>>>Once again, Beatrice Heuser proves that she is the reigning queen of premier military historians at the highest caliber. No doubt, you are familiar with Clausewitz? However, are you aware that Clausewitz may be far more famous for his poetic phrasing of military concepts, than for his originality regarding crucial military constructs? War is an act of government policy; defense as the stronger for of war; the criticality of chance in war; the importance of understanding the complexities, dynamics and nuances of small wars...none of these were original Clausewitzian constructs. These and many other crucial military concepts were all written about in great detail long before the much celebrated magnum opus of Clausewitz ever appeared in publication. However, the popular opinion is that Clausewitz said them better.
>>>In her latest work, Heuser employs her highly insightful manner of historical prose and research along with her skillful ability of self-translation to reacquaint us with nine obscure but critical military philosophers: Fourquevaux, de Sailans, Sutcliffe, Mendoza, Chastelet, Santa Cruz, Zanthier, Guibert, and last but not least von Lilienstern. All of these military philosophers were eclipsed by the cruelties of history for one reason or another - and most have been severely overlooked in modern times. Eight of these authors significantly pre-date Clausewitz in their publications by century or two; while one other is actually a contemporary of Clausewitz and well-known within the same Prussian military circles.

>>>After some reflection, the obvious becomes clear that it was most likely the poetic use of military language which mesmerized so many into the myopic misperception that Clausewitz, alone, was the one true god-of-war. In reality, over the millenniums of history, there have been many gods-of-war. Heuser has now eloquently reacquainted us with just a few these lesser gods-of-war. We need more not less of this keen insight - just as we need more not less from Heuser.

Excellent Source Material.

Excellent Source material. Ms Beatrice Heuser has also published several other books on strategy. The work is very thorough and readable. Her commentary and notes add clarity and this should be a desk reference for any serious student of the art. I highly recommend this book.
Chapter One of this book is an introduction to the main players and themes. It provides a very good comparative look. This book also assumes that the reader already has a very good knowledge of the players and the themes, however, it is still very helpful and useful for a novice to the field. The remaing chapters are devoted entirely to individual actors, some of which are unknown to the American audience.
