Nancy (Day) Sakaduski is an award-winning writer and editor who owns Cat & Mouse Press and runs the Rehoboth Beach Short Story Contest, which attracts entries from across the United States. She helps writers perfect their short stories and prepare them for publication, and offers writing tips and advice through her blog and newsletters. Nancy is the author of 23 books (including Scientific English, which she co-authored with Robert A. Day). Nancy founded Cat & Mouse Press, a small independent publishing company in Lewes, DE, to create “playful” books with a connection to the Delaware shore and provide a way for new and emerging writers to have their work published. She enjoys working with writers to help them perfect their writing and experience the joys of publication. Nancy writes for children and adults. This book has it all.

I just finished reading this great new book from publisher Nancy Sakaduski. She knows of what she speaks! It is chocked full of helpful information for beginning or experienced writers like a reference book, but is a delightful read, with lots of humor and wonderful quotes. Not only does it instruct in all the elements for writing a great short story, it also has helpful sections on editing and how to market your story. You will not find a more comprehensive book on the subject - it even has an index for quick reference. I highly recommend this book.

An Empowering Writer's Guide to the Short Story

Something that aspiring writers may not know when they think about diving into short story writing is that -- even though these stories require fewer words than, say, a novella, and can therefore seem easier for a new writer to tackle -- the truth is, they are neither easier nor easy.

Nancy Sakaduski’s “owner’s manual” for writers of the short story gently disabuses readers of the perfectly understandable idea -- that writing a short story is, relatively speaking, a piece of cake.

By covering every aspect of the diverse landscape of concerns that this shorter form presents, and offering examples and advice for each one, this very practical, everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know guidebook will not only educate you, if you are a new, or even somewhat practiced, writer, about what you’re in for when tackling the short story, it will bestow a necessary degree of respect for this likable, though anything but easy-to-write, genre.

And yet, I hasten to add, the end result of reading Sakaduski’s guidebook is not discouraging, but empowering. Primarily because she provides so much good information about writing short stories that truly succeed. This is a wonderful little book

This is a wonderful little book. It's beautifully designed and delightfully written - an inspiration to any writer or would-be writer. And it's full of wonderful ideas you'd never come up with yourself. I myself do not aspire to create short stories but I do write blog articles and I found heaps of highly relevant advice. I'm recommending it to everyone I know who writes or wants to write anything.

Unparalelled Intimacy

Many of the plays in this collection move me greatly-the vision lost in "Krapp's Last Tape", the past's deafening roar(or, dying flame) in "Embers", examinations of self-awareness,memory, and one's ability to express these in "Not I", "That Time" & "A Piece of Monologue", the sadly charming lost Ireland of "All That Fall", the image of a reader literally staring an image of himself in the face while reading a memoir-like first person narative in "Ohio Impromtu". This book contains Beckett's works for theatre, radio, television, film, mimes, which may explain it's seeming unstageability to other readers. Beckett viewed his dramatic works as his break from the serious writing of his prose early in his career("Waiting for Godot" was written as a break between Molloy & Malone Dies), but as he moved on toward silence, Beckett's theatre became the medium in which he achiveed his greatest acclaim & fame. The late dramas of "That Time" & "A Piece of Monologue" anticipate the self-searching confessional style & subject of the Nohow On 'novels', and present investigations of memory, responsibility, self-identity, and expressionability that are moving and profound, as well as being intimate portraits of the individual alone. All of the plays in this collection are powerful documents of intimate moments that question not only what we call theatre but also question how we understand, experience, question & represent our "self"s, our pasts...our "moments". I can think of no other writer who portrays true moments of aloneness, moments of unself-representing(even as these are represented as farcical) so honestly. Depressing? No, these plays are life affirming, in all its breathes and cries, its cycles of memorializing and willful forgetting, its fabrications and its confessional, the blinding light and frightening countenance of the other's gaze, the silence of another's absence. Intimate moments are diverse, and they are represented here without a flinch in all their breadth. No symbols where none intended, Beckett said elsewhere, but are there not other means for expressive art than symbols? "There was a time when I asked myself, What is it./There were times I answered, It's the outing./ Two outings./ Then the return./ Where?/ To the village./ To the inn./ Two outings, then at last the return, to the village, to the inn, by the only road that leads there./ An image, like any other./ But I don't answer any more./ I open"(Cascando). Herein, the opening that constitutes a search for other roads to there.

Extraordinary, but to be taken in doses.

Some advice: although this book contains some of the most astonishing plays ever written, I wouldn't read them all in one go. If you do, doubts might seem to creep in. About how Beckett doesn't really have all that much to say, and became increasingly mannered in his attempts to say it. That his work is really just three variations on basic forms - the Godotesque double act; the old man or woman looking back over a (generally stunted) life; and the pattern plays/mimes. You'll certainly want to rush and read something silly just for a breath of air; there's not much of the vaunted Beckett humour here.
Nevertheless, the collection brims with Beckett's best work - the remorselessly inventive radio play, 'All That Fall'; the sublimely tragic comedy, 'Krapp's Last Tape'; the infernal farce, 'Play'; the deconstruction of nostalgia, 'That Time'; the chamber poignancy of 'Ohio Impromptu'; the great theatrical experiments, 'Footfalls', 'What Where', 'Not I', 'Rockaby', which pushed the language of theatre way past its limits, undermining its boasts of 'live performance' and the functionality of language - in these texts, 'meaning', if there is such a thing, may reside in the stage directions.

Beckett at his best

Beckett gives you a lot in a few lines. His shorter plays are the work of a genius. Poignant as usual and more concise than ever he gives you a lot to think about. I LOVE Not I, Come and Go and many others. The line "f*** life" in Rockaby stands for a lot, really: pity us poor human beings! We ARE doomed.

type of motor is imposed and that naturally limits the
fields of possibility.
Rather than exposing the abstract criterion, it is more
interesting to develop summarily in this and the following
chapters, the general outline of a project of a given type
of airplane, making general remarks which are applicable
to each design as it appears. In order to fix this idea,
let us suppose that we wish to study a fast airplane to be
used for sport races.

Good instructions... a bit dated.

The designs and instructions were well detailed. It's obviously a bit dated, but the aeronautical engineering is sound and the explanations cogent. Enjoyed it a lot. Now, if my garage was big enough, I'd go build myself a nice little biplane.

Old Book With Lots of Good Information and Awful Formatting

This book is actually "Airplane Design and Construction" by Erich Hartfield. It is a very old book, but it has a ton of great information and diagrams.

The book is divided into four parts. The first three sections are about the structure of the airplane and how different design considerations for the various structural elements will affect the flight characteristics of the airplane. There are lots of illustrations, diagrams, charts, and formulas.

The final section is about the "Design of the Aircraft". This section contains a mix of outdated information in the section about materials with other good information about determining flight characteristics, static analysis, etc.

This book is not in text. It is a compilation of scanned images of the pages. Each page displays with a large margin and big empty column on the right side. You can click and zoom to make it larger, but it has to be done on each page. With better formatting this book would get 5-stars.

About the Author

Davydd J. Greenwood, Ph.D., At Cornell University for 37 years, Greenwood has conducted action research in the Spanish Basque Country, Spain’s La Mancha region, in Upstate New York, and in research universities, Greenwood has published Industrial Democracy as Process: Participatory Action Research in the Fagor Cooperative Group of Mondragón (with cooperative members); Teaching Participatory Action Research in the University in Studies in Continuing Education (with the students from the class), and Introduction to Action Research: Social Research for Social Change, first and second editions (with Morten Levin), Action Research: The Scandinavian Action Research Development Program, and articles and chapters in the Action Research, the International Journal of Action Research, the Handbook of Qualitative Inquiry, and the Handbook of Action Research. Davydd is working with the CIREM Foundation in Spain on a small business development program based on action research strategies including the construction of small business networks that create co-generative learning arenas. This involves two small business networks in Spain’s La Mancha region, one in Catalonia, and one in Madrid. Davydd is in the fifth year of an international project on the future of public higher education institutions with a particular emphasis on strategies for defending the “public goods” universities once created through action research strategies that engage cross-disciplinary stakeholder teams with external university constituencies in creating co-generative learning/action arenas that could reinvigorate public and political support for higher education. Morten Levin is a partner in both of these projects and Davydd and Morten are now initiating a period of examination of the concepts and practices of academic freedom from an action research perspective.

Wonderfully Insightful

I was first introduced to the writings of Frank Laubach around seven years ago. Before that time, I had no idea who he was or the enormous contributions he had made to society and Christendom. What I have learned since my first introduction to the story of Frank Laubach is that some have called him the “greatest teacher of our time,” Time magazine called him Mr. Literacy. On the anniversary of his 100th birthday (1984), the U.S. Post Office honored him by putting his picture on a postage stamp in their Great American series. Learning all of these facts made me feel a bit silly about never even hearing the name of this great American, but even these accomplishments and accolades do not complete the story of Mr. Frank Laubach.

Laubach was also a Christian missionary commissioned by the Union Congregational church to serve the people of the Philippines. It was during this time that Laubach wrote a number of the journal entries and letters that would eventually be collected and shared with people today.

One of the first essays I read from Laubach was titled The Game with Minutes, which was quickly followed by Letters by a Modern Mystic. I can honestly say these works were a catalyst for change in the trajectory of my personal Christian development and maturity. Some readers may be familiar with the writings of Brother Lawrence in Practice of the Presence of God. Laubach’s writings were, to me, a modern example of Brother Lawrence’s teachings in the respects of living constantly in the presence and the awareness of God.

I was greatly intrigued by the title of Laubach’s book, Prayer: The Mightiest Force in the World. I could only imagine the rich insights this man, who attempted to practice unbroken fellowship with God, might share with his teaching and thoughts on the topic of prayer. I have not been disappointed.

The length of the book is just under one hundred pages and is grouped into a collection of short writings. There is no introduction or preface that provides the reader with any information regarding the collection of these writings, but it appears to me that they might be collected from short essays, letters, and diary entries. Perhaps from this collective stream of writings, this book on the subject of prayer was created. This is only my supposition. The editor of the book has grouped the writings into six chapters or sub-groupings. Chapter one is titled Pray for World Leaders and includes ten essays. The following chapters are arranged in similar fashion with varying numbers of essays. Chapter two is titled Pray for the Church; chapter three is How Prayer Helps God; chapter four is Prayer Experiments; chapter five is Christ—The Answer; and chapter six is Our Appalling Power.

I think there are a couple of points to keep in consideration when reading a book of this nature. First, the origin of the writings should be taken into account. I do not know for sure, but I believe these essays have been collected from several sources, one of which might be personal diary and journal entries. There may be “raw” thoughts and unpolished ideas included in these essays, some of which may not have a clear context. Additionally, some of these writings are dated and flavored from the time they were written and while that may not seem terribly relevant, it is helpful to keep in mind.

I enjoyed the whole book, but my two favorite chapters have been Prayer Experiments and Our Appalling Power. There are some amazing thoughts shared in these chapters that have inspired several great reflections for me. I continue to go back to this little book time and again drawing from the well of this brilliant man who devoted his life to the pursuit of God and service to God’s people. This is great addition to my resources on the subject of prayer.

I don not consider myself a very religious person at all. I read The Power of Positive Thinking and this book was mentioned so I thought it was worth a read. I was amazed by how effective some of the techniques are. It's not preachy at all, just a down to earth guide to using prayer more effectively.

Jan Albers received her doctorate in history from Yale University. She has taught at Yale, the University of Sussex, and Middlebury and St. Michael's Colleges in Vermont.

A sense of place

Rarely has a volume of such physical grace and beauty contained such an important and topical message. I picked up my copy after returning to Vermont for a long weekend, and found the text both forceful, dynamic and informative, artistically combined with beautiful illustrations. Not a hagiography, and avoiding the temptation to airbrush the realities of Vermont into a pastiche of the country idyll in Yankee New England, Jan Albers has created an immensely readable but intellectually rigorous study of the development and land-use choices that Vermonters have made since the Abenaki were disturbed by white settlers.
This alone would be enough to qualify "Hands on the Land" for a place on the bookshelves of students of land-use and concerned citizens in rural and semi-rural areas everywhere. That this study is so accessible and lavishly illustrated, (much in the style of the latest offerings from the OUP History of England series) commends it to the broadest possible audience. In fact, I was so taken with this that I bought two - one for my mother, a native and transplanted Vermonter, and one for me - your bookshelf will be a richer and happier place with a copy!

Experiential Magnificence

This among the very few books I have experienced which combine exceptional beauty with information of urgent importance. As this volume indicates, no other state is lovelier than Vermont. Few others have a more interesting historty. But as Lyman Orton correctly indicates in the Foreword, the reader can also "take away some lessons about what determines land use, and what economic, social, cultural, and environmental consequences land-use choices may have." The reader is then urged to become involved in her or his community's efforts "to define its future, while realizing that the future's scenarios are written by today's actions." True enough. What's at stake? Examine the wealth of photographs provided in Chapter 1 and in subsequent chapters. Such natural beauty could indeed be compromised...as it has already been in so many other areas throughout the United States.
By examining the almost 400-year history of the Vermont landscape, Chapters 2-5, Albers suggests that the values of the past can be betrayed by what is done (and not done) now. Thus can the future be pre-determined, for better or worse. To have "hands on the land" is to have the power to determine its fate. That is as true of neighborhoods in the inner-city as it is of villages in Vermont. All are communities at risk.
Almost everyone will enjoy experiencing this beautiful as well as informative book. It is "must reading" for anyone involved in decisions which concern land use, and especially those decisions which have significant economic, social, cultural, and environmental consequences.

A must for planning boards

Although subtitled, "A History of the Vermont Landscape," "Hands On The Land" is a book that should give everyone pause to think about what is happening to the landscape surrounding them, no matter where they live. Published for the Orton Family Foundation "to help the citizens of rural America define the future, shape the growth, and preserve the heritage of their communities" author Jan Albers accomplishes her task well. Her text is interesting, highly informative, easy to read and provocative for those concerned about "where do we go from here?" The illustrations (on almost every page)share top billing with the text. "Hands On The Land" should be "must reading" for all planning board members and conservationists to help them gain new perspectives about growth and control. If I could afford it I'd give a copy to every town official on Cape Cod.

About the Author
Pierre Jules Th�ophile Gautier was a French poet, dramatist, novelist, journalist, and literary critic. He was a contributor to various journals, most notably to La Presse. He was director of Revue de Paris from 1851-1856. During this time, Gautier left La Presse and became a journalist for Le Moniteur Universel. Gautier acquired the editorship of influential review L'Artiste in 1856. In 1862 he was elected chairman of the Soci�t� Nationale des Beaux-Arts. During the Franco-Prussian war, Gautier made his way back to Paris. He remained with his family throughout the invasion and the aftermath of the Commune, eventually dying in 1872 of a cardiac disease.

A Great Gothic Tale

The Mummy's Foot by Th�ophile Gautier is a traditional and charming Gothic tale. Gautier tells the tale of an aristocratic Frenchman who purchases a mummified foot to be used as a paperweight in a curiosity shop. The foot, which is taken from Princess Hermonthis, is more than what it seems, and inspires a fantastic nocturnal journey for its new owner.

The Mummy's Foot is mediocre, because the plot line is so predictable. I enjoyed reading the description of the antique shop where Gautier describes it as having only two authentic items: dust and cobwebs. It is well written; his prose is very powerful and very visual. You can really see the shop, its owner, and the protagonist's flat. Otherwise, the plot follows the traditional trajectory of someone who purchases and item from a dubious shop with an equally dubious shopkeeper. There is magic, of course, but nothing spectacular about the tale.
