Purchased to help think through my dissertation proposal. Yin provides a thoughtful overview of case study methodology, including attention to both larger considerations of using case study findings to further analytic generalizations and to the step-by-step details of doing case study research. If you are serious about doing case study research, I recommend reading this book along with Cresswell's "Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design: Choosing Among Five Approaches" and Stake's "Multiple Case Study Analysis."

Excellent book for people writing a dissertation

I had problems writing my methodology section for my dissertation but after reading this book I had the AHA moment. I wish I would have bought 6 months ago when I started my dissertation journey.

Maybe a 6th edition could just take care of the poor writing?

This may be the go-to resource for conducting case study research, but the book is so poorly edited, it is extremely difficult to read. Spelling errors, left out words, extra words that don't make sense -- mostly many many typos. It appears the editor didn't proofread at all. The content is ok, but often the author appears to seem confused between case study and quantitative. Also, the directions for data collection are helpful, but I would not rely on this as my only authoritative source of how to conduct case study research. Maybe a 6th edition could just take care of the poor writing?

A well researched book, densely populated with weird and interesting entries. I discovered more yokai than I had imagined existed. The essays on the more popular Japanese spirit folk--kappa, kitsune, tengu, &c.--are delightfully lengthy, but just as interesting are the more obscure yokai listed here, such as a monk made of ash, a microscopic viral boar, or a giant sea cucumber born from a girl's discarded underclothes. This book is dense with legendary creatures, the entries including any relevant folklore whenever possible.

Although the amount of text is admirable (if not sometimes a little glib), the design of the book is a little disappointing. It's illustrated throughout, but often the works shown (most of them Edo period prints) are pixelated, as if they had been lifted off the web from a Wikipedia article. The original illustrations by Anthony Wallis are reproduced well, but his pictures sometimes pale next to those of Kuniyoshi and other Japanese printmakers. (Also--and I realize this is a huge nitpick--the designers used a title font in the book that does not include all of the glyphs used in yokai names, so occasionally an special character appears in the middle of a heading in a different typeface than the rest of the word. It looks sloppy.)

Still, I purchased this book hoping to learn more about yokai, especially the obscure ones I could not find in other books or the internet, and in that sense, this book really delivers. A solid reference for those interested in the weird critters and beings that inhabit Japan's folk tales.

Some Pixelation, But The Information Is Worth Every Penny!

This book is absolutely stunning. I've always loves yokai and have collected as many books as I can on the subject, and this one is by far my favorite because it is so cohesive and includes many, many types that I haven't read about in my other books. There are two downsides I've stumbled across, one being that some information contradicts other books I've read (which with a subject like yokai is fairly forgivable because legends do evolve) and the more.... I'd say 'upsetting' one is how some of the images were handled. Many look wonderful, I'd say the majority are great, but some look as though they were small images stretched to fill whole or half pages when they shouldn't have been, and that left them pixelated. None so badly you can't see what they are, but a few distractingly so. That is the only reason I felt I had to take away one star.

Beyond that, the information is amazing and opened the door to many yokai I'd never heard about and that was the entire purpose for me. If you read about one you really do like, I'd recommend just looking them up separately to make sure the information is correct. It works perfectly as a starting point, and a beautiful starting point at that. Even with the handful of pixel-images, it's still probably the prettiest yokai-related book on my shelf.

Yokai are Awesome

The Great Yokai Encyclopedia had new yokai that I have never known about before. As soon as I opened up the book, i could tell that i would cherish it forever. I do agree with the following reviews that this book doesn't have an index to help the reader search for a certain species of yokai and some of the pictures are hard to tell which yokai it is (unless you start reading each creature's infomation to match the written description to the picture which can take some time). But, it is a good book if you have alot of imagination and if you don't mind this weird format.

About the Author
Raymond A. Serway (PhD, Illinois Institute of Technology) is Professor Emeritus at James Madison University. His honors and awards include an honorary doctorate degree from his alma mater, Utica College, the 1990 Madison Scholar Award at James Madison University, the Distinguished Teaching Award at Clarkson University in 1977, and the Alumni Achievement Award from Utica College in 1985. As Guest Scientist at the IBM Research Laboratory in Zurich, Switzerland, he worked with K. Alex M�ller, 1987 Nobel Prize recipient. He was a visiting scientist at Argonne National Laboratory, where he collaborated with his mentor and friend, the late Sam Marshall. Dr. Serway is the coauthor of COLLEGE PHYSICS, Eleventh Edition; PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, Ninth Edition; PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICS, Fifth Edition; ESSENTIALS OF COLLEGE PHYSICS; MODERN PHYSICS, Third Edition; and the high school textbook PHYSICS, published by Holt McDougal. He has published more than 40 research papers in the field of condensed matter physics and has given more than 60 presentations at professional meetings.

Clement J. Moses is Emeritus Professor of Physics at Utica College. He was born and brought up in Utica, NY, and holds an A.B. from Hamilton College, an M.S. from Cornell University, and a Ph.D. from State University of New York at Binghamton. He has over 30 years of science writing and teaching experience at the college level, and is a co-author of College Physics, 6th edition, with Serway and Faughn. His research work, both in industrial and university settings, has dealt with defects in solids, solar cells, and the dynamics of atoms at surfaces. In addition to science writing, Dr. Moses enjoys reading novels, gardening, cooking, singing, and going to operas.

Curt A. Moyer is Professor and Chair of the Department of Physics and Physical Oceanography at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. He came to UNC-Wilmington in 1999. Before that, he had been a member of the Physics Department at Clarkson University since 1974. He has written numerous research articles in the fields of condensed matter physics and surface science. Dr. Moyer is an experienced teacher and an advocate for the uses of computers in education. He prepared the web-based QMTools software that accompanies this text.

About the Author
John M. Yumoto is perhaps the foremost authority on the samurai sword outside of Japan. A native of California, he began his study of Japanese swrodcraft during his early childhood in Japan. While in Japan he studied under a number of masters from different schools and learned the art of sword polishing and of identification and evaluation. He has held membership in a number of sword clubs and at present is an active member of the Japan Society for the Preservation of the Samurai Sword and the Northern California Sword Club. He has also been requested to serve as advisor to the Japanese Sword Society of the United States, presently being organized.

Somewhat dry in presentation...

This is a fairly serious overview of Samurai swords intended for someone who is interested in collecting them (or perhaps has inherited one). That is, this is quite a 'theoretical' book intended to convey, in a quite concise manner, the myriad of details needed to identify Samurai swords.
The book goes through a very brief overview of Japan's sword history including some very rough information on the swords produced in various time periods. Mixed in here is a tiny amount of non-technical information in the form of some tales of how the special clay-coating heat-treating process was invented.
The book then presents detailed information on such subjects as blade curvature, temper lines, tip profile, tang markings and finishing. This section has a number of line drawings that do help convey the information in a clear and simple manner.
This leads into a very in-depth section with the Japanese characters that could be found on a sword tang. This section is quite long and, considering the book's purpose, not really very useful to the majority of people. That is, without understanding Japanese you really aren't likely to be able to use this section - it would be much better to consult with someone who does understand Japanese.
I really had hoped for more of an overview of the history with some details on the more famous crafters. There is also very little information on the manufacturing process other than some very cursory paragraphs and drawings. I agree that this subject deserves many books but I also think that since it is not really highlighted in this volume, a beginner will have no real reason to understand WHY certain eras and smiths were regarded so highly. That is, without more background on the process one is left asking the question "what is wrong with a stainless-steel blade?".
One for the serious collector but you will definitely need other books on the subject to really get an appreciation of the remarkable nature of the Samurai sword.

There is probably no other book, in english, that has as much info on antique samurai blades as this book. A must for anyone interested in sword collecting or even a serious martial artist.

This book is exactly what you need to understand the factors that determine rarity and value. It contains a comprehensive delineation of the varieties of each sword part, maker dates and places, and a good dose of relevant history to the development and use of the sword.
This is not the ONLY book you need - but it should be the first.
This small investment can literally save you thousands in mistaken purchases...you will quickly see why you should save your money, i.e. don't buy several $400 swords from Ebay, and rather purchase the "special" (albeit expensive) blade.
There are too many hoaxers out there, and you need to visualize your purpose. Do you want a fragile 15th century relic? A modern (and very pricey) blade of Iaido practice? A WWII (and prior) collectible? What's the difference?
Why be able to read the maker's mark? What difference doe it make? Do you want the master's blade, the student's blade or the machine made? Better find out the difference before you invest.
