Impressive

Whatever turns Hollywood's head and makes them decide to make a movie or tv show of it, be it a novel or comic. Ignore Hollywood and read the original material. I feel so violated knowing only those silly cartoons and having these books elude me. Good story. Makes sense. Never saw Shredder as an underworld businessman that interacts with people that want his criminal services. Not just talking to talking brains, robots, and monsters all day. The turtles actually acted like ninja, not power rangers.

It's aged nicely. I'm not sure I'd say it's perfect though.

To be blatantly honest at the risk of upsetting a few hipster fans, I prefer the ones in color, partly because those are the ones I saw first, and mostly because it means red blood. There are parts of this comic that are pretty bloody, as well as some graphic "piercing" if you know what I mean. It's not kid-friendly and It's hard for me to tell how it got turned into a children's cartoon series, albeit very loosely-based. I don't remember exactly how much I paid for this and the price might have gone up or down since then, but I did get my money's worth. The only reason I'm rating it four stars instead of five is because it doesn't grab me like 5s do. It's still pretty good though if you're into dark premises and a Japanese sense of honor and revenge ... in New York ... with anthropomorphic turtles and a sensei rat who's also pretty much their adoptive father. If you're looking for April, she's in the next issue; this is pretty much just an origin story that may or may not have any connection to the Daredevil comics.
The color format is a double-edged sword if you also like to read comics and graphic novels on black-and-white display devices like Paperwhite and older Amazon Kindles since the contrast is lower, making it harder to make out what's going on than the original B&W formats, but that's more of a problem in later issues, and if you don't read these on a black and white display, you got nothing to worry about ... except brightness glare, but I'm not reviewing e-readers right now.

Takes me back...

I grew up with this series in the 80's in the original black and white.Colorizing it may seem like "blasphemy" to some but it works. Takes me back to my childhood and the version of the Turtles that were a little more "adult" than the fluff you see on Nickelodeon today.
