It's a standard part of the modern story, that we're about to run out of resources. There's only so much available, metals and minerals are soon to be in short supply. This is incorrect and this book walks through the reasons why it is incorrect.
For example, we are told that we are likely to run out of mineral reserves in a generation or so. This is correct but entirely unimportant. For every generation runs out of mineral reserves: the reason being that mineral reserves is the name we give to those minerals we're going to use in the coming generation. We are no more going to run out of mineral reserves than we are going to run out of breakfast because we eat what is in the refrigerator.
The book notes and explains Worstall getting the China rare earths scare correct, in advance (yes, explaining in 2010 why the problem would not be a problem, when all others were headless chickens on the subject). Discusses the purblind ignorance on display from the New Scientist and various environmentalists on mineral reserves and points to the one fatal assumption that the Club of Rome made in their report, Limits to Growth. The assumption that cooked their conclusion into their report, whatever else they did. Jeremy Grantham's mistake about the minerals for fertilisers running out is also explained. Further, when we should recycle and when we shouldn't is laid out in a form that even a member of a Green Party should be able to understand.
Written in Worstall's usual light style, no prior technical knowledge is needed.
That there might be environmental problems out there is entirely true. That there might even be environmental problems with mineral use could also be true. But the idea that we're about to run out of them, or even face any possible shortages on anything like a human related timescale, simply isn't.
And this book proves it.

The We Have The Whole Planet Fallacy

In this book, Tim Worstall makes a point in explaining the difference between reserves and resources. Reserves are the proven stock of minerals that are currently mined or will be soon in the future, and as such will be mined within a generation, as it makes no sense to prove mineral occurrences that will only be mined in over thirty years. Reserves thus almost by definition will be depleted within one generation. Resources, on the other hand, are, to be speaking very loosely, the whole stock of minerals of the entire planet. Their occurrence has not been proven and often are still unknown. But geologists have often a good idea where to look for them. Thus, according to this distinction, Tim Worstall maintains that even if reserves will be depleted with a generation, resources will not, as we have virtually the whole planet full of them.
Moreover, not understanding this difference, the “New Scientist” ran an article in 2007 that said that we will soon run out of some rare earths, as there are no reserves of them. Tim Worstall now with pleasure tears this piece apart, as he explains that these metals are not mined independently, but are produced as by-products of some other elements. There are thus no reserves but plenty of resources of these rare metals.
This is all nice and good, would Tim Worstall not go on making statements that he completely does not prove in his short piece. As such, he questions for example that climate change will lead to increased sea levels, without putting any evidence behind this claim. Thus, if some scientists writing for a journal make a mistake and are not able to distinguish between reserves and resources, then all climate scientists must be making an error as well.
Moreover, Tim Worstall misses the big elephant in the room. He criticizes the Club of Rome that they do not allow for metals and minerals substituting for fossil fuel usage (p. 56). He then goes on to cite examples where the renewables industry is doing exactly that. However, the big question is whether renewable energy sources will ever be able to substitute one day the usage of fossil fuel entirely. Considering how many PV and wind installations are going online each year, all they contributed in 2012 to our worldwide energy production amounted, without hydroelectric power, to not more than 1.9% (Source: EIA). Thus, we need 50 times more of them. And I doubt if that will ever happen. As a consequence, even though we might have enough mineral and metal resources, we might not have the energy to mine them, even though we might not need more energy for future mining operations, as Tim Worstall points out in chapter 8 (pp. 48 ff.).
It is a telltale of this fact that Tim Worstall adds a table with the reserves and resources for all metals and minerals, leaving suspiciously the fossil fuels out: “I’ve listed out the mineral reserves, mineral resources, total resources (ie, the percentage content of the lithosphere) of each of the minerals and metals that anyone keeps tabs upon. This does not include any of the fossil fuels.” (p. 34) Thus it is just and reasonable if he criticizes the Club of Rome for their mistakes, but their main conclusion, that we live on a finite planet and might soon run out of one of the most important resources; cheap energy, with which we can reasonably run a functioning economy, stands for me still unrefuted.
One small side remark: I found it hard to believe that such a small piece, they're normally called Kindle Singles, was supposed to cost $6.99. They are usually cheaper. Therefore, in line with the rule of supply and demand, I went to the website of the author's institute and downloaded there the paper for free.
