Warning: This book will move you.

I'm not through with it yet, and Ive already ordered 3 more for my pastor and some friends. Ken and Connie take you through the nightmare of being told you have cancer - and through the medical system which can run the gamut from being helpful and caring to the patient being a number and just another case. All along the way, Ken, who is "The Goto Guy" when it comes to dealing with life, is encountering a loving caring God who is telling him to for once let go, and Let Him. This is something he isn't used to doing.

This book comes from the heart. Its the real thing - something truer and more honest than most of what we encounter in this life. I'm in awe and moved by the sincerity and the message.

If you have or ever had cancer it is life shattering. Even being told you might have cancer is a show stopper and a strange trip through the medical system (Ive been there). I recommend this book to anyone who is anywhere along that path - I recommend it to anyone who has any kind of chronic or serious illness and I recommend it to you, who may not have any problems in life right now. Get this book, no, get a couple 3 copies and give them to people you care about. This book isn't about the Fiscal Cliff, the Middle East, or anywhere else, its not about whats on the Web, Radio, or TV now. Its about us, what we are doing here, and why. Most of all its about who put us here.

Moving Journey through Cancer

In Stumbling on Open Ground: Love, God, Cancer and Rock 'n Roll, Ken Mansfield and his wife Connie, wrote an open, honest and very moving book about his and their battle with multiple cancers. Ken was the American producer for the Beatles, under the label of Apple Records.

Ken and Connie detail their journey through two different occurrences of cancer. They write with honesty about their spiritual, emotional, intellectual and physical battle with cancer. Ken and Connie do not sugar coat the difficulties nor the sickness, the wavering faith, nor do the minimize the joys and faith surprises which occur along the way.

This is a very moving book. Each chapter begins with a short one page summary about Connie's thoughts, feelings and perceptions. It was nice to be able to gain insight as to what she was feeling and dealing with.

Even during the time when Ken was battling cancer, he and Connie would speak at various churches and seminars sharing God's work in their lives. I highly recommend this book.

Ken Mansfield wrote a book called Stumbling on Open Ground and shows how a person can be open and honest when given challenges. During his tenure Ken has worked with some very famous people including the Beatles. When Ken learns he has cancer, everything in the past becomes unimportant.

Ken shows us how we can com close to God by dealing with struggles in life. After all life may not always be a bowl full of cherries. There may be stumbling blocks that seem to deal harsh blows to you along the way. Ken demonstrates that staying close to God is the ultimate sacrafice to live a full life.

For competent cooks new to Indian cooking

Written clearly and extremely well illustrated. If you can't follow these instructions, you probably shouldn't be allowed to play with knives in the kitchen. Most of recipes read as though the dishes would be delicious, although I have yet to acquire the herbs and spices necessary to actually make one. I have, however, read the book from cover to cover in myarmchair. My only criticism is that there seems to be some confusion regarding volumetric measures, for example with respect to the number of ounces in a cup. This is a minor point, however, since cooking is an inexact art and small deviations in measurement are unlikely to make any noticeable difference. That said, the novitiate will definitely want to have the book open on the kitchen work surface, as timing of additions seems to be important for a number of the recipes. The authors also thoughtfully provide various kitchen tips and cautionary notes; for example, regarding handling and use of Capsicum peppers. For those of us who don't have an Indian mother to teach us, the authors make an heroic effort to fill that role. I think that they succeed rather handily, and can't wait until I collect the spices, roll up my sleeves, and let the authors guide me in my first steps into a new (to me) form of cooking.

Excellent Indian cookbook. I am very pleased with the way it is layed out. She explains each step. And nutritional info after all recipes. She has a ver interesting section on all the spices and ingredients included in Indian cooking. I am very satisfied with my purchase.

We bought an earlier edition of this cookbook ("Best Ever Indian Cooking", same publisher), and have been waiting forever for a re-print, so I could buy a gift copy.

Pros:
- extremely easy to follow - the recipe steps are logically and (mostly) sequentially laid out... many cookbooks' recipe steps seem to jump around a bit, so if you're not a big "mis-en-place" cook, you'll suddenly find that you need an extra cup of "X", or to have already minced "Y".
- a very good early section on prepping the pastes & other mixtures you'll be drawing on frequently
- very useful pictures to help keep you on-track
- a TON of different recipes - and many are "everyday" style
- and the recipes, for the most part, seem to be pretty forgiving of substitutions or measurement alterations

Cons:

It was late at night and Lula and I had been staking out Salvatore Sunucchi, better known as Uncle Sunny, when Lula spotted Jimmy Spit. Spit had his prehistoric Cadillac Eldorado parked on the fringe of the Trenton public housing projects, half a block from Sunucchi’s apartment, and he had the trunk lid up.

“Hold on here,” Lula said. “Jimmy’s open for business, and it looks to me like he got a trunk full of handbags. I might need one of them. A girl can never have too many handbags.”

Minutes later, Lula was examining a purple Brahmin bag studded with what Spit claimed were Swarovski crystals. “Are you sure this is a authentic Brahmin bag?” Lula asked Spit. “I don’t want no cheap-�ass imitation.”

“I have it on good authority these are the real deal,” Spit said. “And just for you I’m only charging ten bucks. How could you go wrong?”

Lula slung the bag over her shoulder to take it for a test drive, and a giraffe loped past us. It continued on down the road, turning at Sixteenth Street and disappearing into the darkness.

“I didn’t see that,” Lula said.

“I didn’t see that neither,” Spit said. “You want to buy this handbag or what?”

“That was a giraffe,” I said. “It turned the corner at Sixteenth Street.”

“Probably goin’ the 7-�Eleven,” Spit said. “Get a Slurpee.”

A black Cadillac Escalade with tinted windows and a satellite dish attached to the roof sped past us and hooked a left at Sixteenth. There was the sound of tires screeching to a stop, then gunfire and an ungodly shriek.

“Not only didn’t I see that giraffe,” Spit said, “but I also didn’t see that car or hear that shit happening.”

He grabbed the ten dollars from Lula, slammed the trunk lid shut, and took off.

“They better not have hurt that giraffe,” Lula said. “I don’t go with that stuff.”

I looked over at her. “I thought you didn’t see the giraffe.”

“I was afraid it might have been the ’shrooms on my pizza last night what was making me see things. I mean it’s not every day you see a giraffe running down the street.”

My name is Stephanie Plum, and I work as a bond enforcement officer for Vincent Plum Bail Bonds. Lula is the office file clerk, but more often than not she’s my wheelman. Lula is a couple inches shorter than I am, a bunch of pounds bigger, and her skin is a lot darker. She’s a former streetwalker who gave up her corner but kept her wardrobe. She favors neon colors and animal prints, and she fearlessly tests the limits of spandex. Today her brown hair was streaked with shocking pink to match a tank top that barely contained the bounty God had bestowed on her. The tank top stopped a couple inches above her skintight, stretchy black skirt, and the skirt ended a couple inches below her ass. I’d look like an idiot if I dressed like Lula, but the whole neon pink and spandex thing worked for her.

“I gotta go see if the giraffe’s okay,” Lula said. “Those guys in the Escalade might have been big game poachers.”

“This is Trenton, New Jersey!”

Lula was hands on hips. “So was that a giraffe, or what? You don’t think it’s big game?”

Since Lula was driving we pretty much went where Lula wanted to go, so we jumped into her red Firebird and followed the giraffe.

There was no Escalade or giraffe in sight when we turned the corner at Sixteenth, but a guy was lying facedown in the middle of the road, and he wasn’t moving.

“That don’t look good,” Lula said, “but at least it’s not the giraffe.”

Lula stopped just short of the guy in the road, and we got out and took a look.

“I don’t see no blood,” Lula said. “Maybe he’s just takin’ a nap.”

“Yeah, or maybe that thing implanted in his butt is a tranquilizer dart.”

“I didn’t see that at first, but you’re right. That thing’s big enough to take down a elephant.” Lula toed the guy, but he still didn’t move. “What do you suppose we should do with him?”

I punched 911 into my phone and told them about the guy in the road. They suggested I drag him to the curb so he didn’t get run over, adding that they’d send someone out to scoop him up.

While we waited for the EMS to show, I rifled the guy’s pockets and learned that his name was Ralph Rogers. He had a Hamilton Township address, and he was fifty-�four years old. He had a MasterCard and seven dollars.

The EMS truck slid in without a lot of fanfare. Two guys got out and looked at Ralph, who was still on his stomach with the dart stuck in him.

“That’s not something you see every day,” the taller of the two guys said.

“The dart might have been meant for the giraffe,” Lula told them. “Or maybe he’s one of them shape-�shifters, and he used to be the giraffe.”

The two men went silent for a beat, probably trying to decide if they should get the butterfly net out for Lula.

“It’s a full moon,” the shorter one finally said.

The other guy nodded, and they loaded Ralph into the truck and drove off.

“Now what?” Lula asked me. “We going to look some more for Uncle Sunny, or we going to have a different activity, like getting a pizza at Pino’s?”

“I’m done. I’m going home. We’ll pick up Sunny’s trail tomorrow.”

Truth is, I was going home to a bottle of champagne I had chilling in my fridge. It had been left on my kitchen counter a couple days before as partial payment for a job I’d done for my friend and sometime employer Ranger. The champagne had come with a note suggesting that Ranger needed a date. Okay, so Ranger is hot, and luscious, and magic in bed, but that didn’t totally compensate for the fact that the last time I’d been Ranger’s date I’d been poisoned. I’d been saving the champagne for a special occasion, and it seemed like seeing a giraffe running down the street qualified.

Lula drove me back to the bonds office, I picked up my car, and twenty minutes later I was in my apartment, leaning against the kitchen counter, guzzling champagne. I was watching my hamster, Rex, run on his wheel when Ranger walked in.

Ranger doesn’t bother with trivial matters like knocking, and he isn’t slowed down by a locked door. He owns an elite security firm that operates out of a seven-�story stealth office building located in the center of Trenton. His body is perfect, his moral code is unique, his thoughts aren’t usually shared. He’s in his early thirties, like me, but his life experience adds up to way beyond his years. He’s of Latino heritage. He’s former Special Forces. He’s sexy, smart, sometimes scary, and �frequently overprotective of me. He was currently armed and wearing black fatigues with the Rangeman logo on his sleeve. That meant he was on patrol duty, most likely filling in for one of his men.

“Working tonight?” I asked him.

“Taking the night shift for Hal.” He looked at my glass. “Are you drinking champagne out of a beer mug?”

“I don’t have any champagne glasses.”

“Babe.”

“Babe” covers a lot of ground for Ranger. It can be the prelude to getting naked. It can be total exasperation. It can be a simple greeting. Or, as in this case, it can just mean I’ve amused him.

Ranger smiled ever so slightly and took a step closer to me.

“Stop,” I said. “Don’t come any closer. The answer is no.”

His brown eyes locked onto me. “I didn’t ask a question.”

“You were going to.”

“True.”

“Well, don’t even think about it, because I’m not going to do it.”

“I could change your mind,” he said.

“I don’t think so.”

Okay, truth is Ranger could change my mind. Ranger can be very persuasive.

Ranger’s cellphone buzzed, he checked the text message and moved to the door. “I have to go. Give me a call if you change your mind.”

“About what?”

“About anything.”

“Okay, wait a minute. I want to know the question.”

“No time to explain it,” Ranger said. “I’ll pick you up �tomorrow at seven o’clock. A little black dress would be good. Something moderately sexy.”

The one with the giraffe

Maybe that's it with Stephanie Plum now? Evanovich does Business as usual again, and does so at least since book 16. There is always this little hope that she finally gets around to being brilliant again, but maybe she is just tired of Plum herself? Never mind, there are other funny female detectives out there, but newer and fresher, like in Heads Off (A Lisa Becker Mystery).

The book feels like copy and pasted from the other 19 books, but this time a giraffe on the loose is in it. That's almost worth it, ridiculous and stupid, yes, but not predictable as the rest of the novel. Stephanie still can't decide between Ranger and Morelli - this has gone on so long it's just tedious. Even Grandma Mazur is more creepy than funny, Lula delivers her lines, the guys come in and leave again, absolutely nothing happens. The bounty hunting is nothing special and follows the beaten track. Stephanie says in the book we've done this before". Indeed we have.

If you treat this series like a sitcom with its repetitive humor, it's still enjoyable. But if there is going to be more, I would like to see some development. By which I mean: Dump Joe. Or Ranger. As long as I still care.

Completely disappointed

I was not impressed at all by this installment. Not only was nothing resolved whatsoever in the Morelli-Ranger-Stephanie triangle, Ranger and Morelli had zero depth. They essentially show up, spout tired, cookie-cutter lines and exit their scenes. Same old, same old. I could have been reading any one of the last six or seven installments. Stephanie's visit to Morelli on game day is a weak excuse for her to back off from commitment, and that's the last nod we get to the triangle. Morelli even hands Stephanie off to Ranger a few times so that he can get back to his cop work. Sure, that's realistic. I understand it's fiction, but it would be nice if the characters actually showed believable traits.

The giraffe was mildly amusing, but once again, completely unbelievable. There is no way that a giraffe is going to go unnoticed or unreported in suburbia for that long in this day and age. I like a good story with a funny twist, but when it's that far out of the realm of reason, I can't even manage to hang onto the storyline.

Stephanie just seems to be going through the motions at this point.

It's really too bad, because I loved the earlier installments of this series.

This is the end for me -- I just don't care anymore

I loved the first twelve books in this series. I liked parts of the next two. The past five, though? Total crap. I decided to give it one more shot. I don't want to give up on a series before it's over, so I hang on long after I should. Boy am I disappointed. This book is lazily written and plotted -- and I'm beyond caring about Stephanie anymore. She shows no growth. She shows no maturity. She shows no self-awareness.

You can have a series and still let people grow. Evanovich refuses to do that, though. In fact, she's actually had Stephanie regress. And why? To keep up this tired love triangle. I don't think any reader actually doubts where this triangle is going -- even if they have a dog in the fight (which most readers have long since ceded). So why not have Stephanie actually make the choice and move forward? Have her learn a thing or two? Have her take a step forward instead of a step back?

I will always look back on the first twelve of these books with great fondness -- even pulling them out from time to time to revisit the world. I will, however, be dumping books fifteen through twenty (I find modest amusement in certain scenes of books thirteen and fourteen -- enough to keep them) on the nearest donation center. I know it's mean to give those in need substandard things -- and these past few books definitely qualify -- but, if nothing else, they can be used to kindle a fire during these cold winter months.

Goodbye Stephanie Plum. I just no longer care.

I had the opportunity to review Information Development Using Mike2.0 (Motion Publishing, 2013) by Andreas Rindler, Robert Hillard, Sean McClowry and Sven Mueller.

MIKE2.0, which stands for Method for an Integrated Knowledge Environment, is an open source methodology for Enterprise Information Management that provides a framework for information development including Business Intelligence, Enterprise Data Management, Enterprise Content Management, Information Asset Management, Enterprise Search, Information Management Strategy, Information Governance and Information Architecture.

The MIKE2.0 Methodology was initially created by a team from BearingPoint. All content on MIKE2.0 is made freely available as open source under the Creative Commons Attribution License. All the content is available at [...]

The book consists of key content from Mike2.0 and is arranged in a consumable manner. It includes an overall implementation guide, Mike2.0 solutions, the SAFE (STRATEGIC ARCHITECTURE for the Federated Enterprise) architecture, deliverable templates, popular blog posts and references. Given my own specialty, I appreciated the focus on Information Governance and Big Data.

The book is a definite must read for Information Management professionals who are looking to establish a data management competency within their organizations. And a special word of thanks to Rob, Sven, Sean, and Andi for taking the time to put this book together for the information management practitioner community.

A great book on Mike2.0 and information development

This book's value should be evaluated in conjunction with MIKE2.0 methodology (Method for an Integrated Knowledge Development). Even though there is a variety of information management methodologies established on the market, MIKE2.0 is special in a number of aspects. The methodology is available in the public domain and easily accessible over the Internet. Not only information management professionals can readily review and evaluate the methodology, they can also contribute to the content of MIKE2.0. This makes the methodology collaborative, continuously evolving and ultimately more dynamic and comprehensive than proprietary methodologies developed and maintained by companies and organizations

In the past, one of the challenges for a new user of MIKE2.0 was the abundance of information that MIKE2.0 offers. A demand for a concise book summarizing the key concepts of the methodology, its framework and organization was fairly obvious . The information management community has finally obtained this book!

The book is organized in 8 chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the methodology. Chapter 2 describes the implementation phases. In chapter 3 the solution offerings covered by MIKE2.0 are reviewed at a high level. Chapter 4 focuses on some select solutions that include a number of traditional disciplines like information management and relatively new information development areas such as Big Data. Chapter 5 introduces SAFE architecture (Strategic Architecture for the Federated Enterprise). Some supporting and very useful assets and blogs are presented in chapters 6 and 7. Chapter 8 provides some select case studies that illustrate the methodology in action.

A savvy information management professional can quickly familiarize himself or herself with the methodology framework, activities, deliverables, phases and solutions. Despite its breadth, the book is relatively concise and it is written very well. Some chapters, especially discussions on information development history, will be of interest for a broader audiences including college students.

A REMARKABLE BIOGRAPHY OF GERTRUDE BELL

This is the third biography that I've read on this remarkable woman and by far the best. Winstone(who died in 2010) takes the reader through every aspect of Bell's life(1868-1926) focusing on her privileged upbringing as the daughter of Sir Hugh Bell, through her years at Oxford, mountain climbing in Switzerland, her travels to the Middle East(Syria, Palestine & Arabia), her work both during and after World War One, and finally her work on the formation of modern day Iraq(called Mesopotamia by the British) and the establishment of the Iraqi National Archaeology Museum. Winstone leaves no stone unturned in going over Bell's life. It's all here from her unconsummated love affair with the married Charles Doughty-Wylie whose death at Gallipoli(in 1915) affected her the rest of her life, to her dealing with two men who were her contemporaries(Winston Churchill & T.E. Lawrence) who received far more attention and acclaim than she did in her lifetime. And there are the little things too, such as her terrible handwriting and her passion for Egyptian cigarettes(which probably contributed to her early death at age 57). During her lifetime Bell was a writer, photographer, political administrator, traveler and shaper of nations. Despite all these titles, she considered herself an archaeologist first and her work in this field is still being studied today nearly a hundred years later. One thing that Winstone mentions in his biography is that Bell did not like being photographed herself so there are very few photos of her. The great English painter Edward Poynter painted a portrait of Bell when she was eight years old(in 1876) that shows her standing beside her father. With her long red hair and beautiful features, the look in her eyes tells anyone looking upon the portrait that she was destined for greatness. It's a shame that she is mostly forgotten by history considering how much she contributed to the making of that history. Her life has been overshadowed by T.E. Lawrence(of Arabia fame) but it's impact on history cannot be understated. Along with the other two recent biographies of Bell by Janet Wallach and Georgina Howell, hopefully this remarkable woman's life will be rediscovered. It would make a great mini-series. In the meantime, H.V.F. Winstone's biography is a must read for anyone interested in the Middle East and one of the most remarkable women who was a major player in shaping that region.

Will the real GB please stand up...

Winstone reveals himself in this updated edition as an astute student of history with insight into historical personalities. This is a no-nonsense, unworshipful biography by a very interested, yet disinterested, author; accordingly, the presented life of GB is that of a person, a remarkable and accomplished woman, but neither idol nor heroine. An informative book that provides a sound understanding of the much-mythologized GB, and of the events and times of her life. Unfortunately, a matter-of-fact book is seldom highly engrossing. Nits: the index is erratic (one of my pet peeves!), and in the back-of-book time-comprehensive chronology the Byzantine emperor-warrior Heraclius is misnamed "Heraclitus" (famous philosopher of Ephesus).

Queen of the Desert

I first learned about Bell while studying archaeology and knew only of her involvement with the founding of the Iraq museum . However, I was unaware of the extent of her involvement in the politics of the region. This book is a timely and recommended read for anyone interested in the current situation in Iraq and the Middle East. It provides an well-written and fascinating look at the personalities and forces that shaped the region-Bell being one-and provides insight into the background of the conflicts there. It also is a brilliant portrait of Bell herself and the world of a daughter of privelege in the last days of the British Empire.

Very interesting

This book is a collection of direct quotations from contemporary references (a treat to read), offered in the original german, along with translations and the authors comments and deductions. It contains a number of musical examples, demonstrating Bach's fingering principles and a chapter on Bach's footwork on the organ. A very interesting book for anyone playing Bach, or indeed any baroque music, on the harpsichord or organ. It is a short (but dense) read, only 40 pages not counting the TOC and appendices. The book itself has the size and feel of sheet music (slim keel, large pages) and fits comfortably on an instruments music stand for study.

Highly recommended...

A scholarly but readable work based on primary historical sources. The original German is provided, along with fine, thoughtful translations. I am not a Bach scholar, but if you are interested in finding out what can be learned about Bach's keyboard technique from the historical sources, this little book is probably indispensable.

The next best thing to having him as a teacher

This book uses primary sources to reconstruct how Bach sat at the keyboard and played, and it shows how much it is impossible to extrapolate backward from present-day piano technique to Bach's own harpsichord and organ playing, but gives good ideas on how to achieve some of his effects.

Ancient Saviors or Antediluvian Horrors?

When I opened up to the first page of THE FIRE SEEKERS, I had an involuntary groan at the 1st person narrative (I had forgotten peek at the LOOK NOW feature before hitting the BUY button). Just who I am as a reader, yet I mention this to emphasize the enjoyment I had BECAUSE OF Richard Farr's skillful use of internal discourse, external action, and an absolutely entertaining melding of our hero's personality and the unraveling mysteries with a clarity that never left me muddled nor divorced me from the unique voice of our teen hero. That's a laudable achievement in respects to me as a reader who is usually pre-disposed against 1st person styles. After a lengthy prologue and mid-way into the first chapter, I knew I had to stop and go to the grocery store for what I call "reading snacks"... meaning I was definitely in it for the long haul.

Take an ancient, terrible mystery, not unlike the core of H.P. Lovecraft's own varied mythos, infuse it into an international thriller with all the exotic trimmings, then mix in a dash of outlandish teenager adventuring (and humor) that did bring to mind the movie THE GOONIES, and you get the first book in the planned BABEL TRILOGY. With such a epic scope of compiling oodles of historical fact with fun novelization of "what ifs", it makes the "From the Author: Some Notes on Fact and Fiction" at the end of the book rather interesting, do-not-miss reading in itself, replete with Farr's own wry humor (this last portion alone constitutes 7% of the book's length, going chapter by chapter). And yes, the book does quite openly lead to the next installment, so for those who prefer tidy endings, even in a pending series, you may wish to wait till all three are out. I personally wish all three were out right now. I would immediately dig into the next one... then the last one, I am sure.

Some profanity is sprinkled throughout, and those of particular sensitivity towards secular (even jocular) treatment of divinities may also want to pass. However, in reference to predominately explicit content often found in modern thrillers, THE FIRE SEEKERS is on the cleaner side of the spectrum, being on the whole a PG-13 (to borrow from the old movie ratings) body of work.

Not Sci Fi

I think Amazon made a mistake classifying this book as sci fi. And calling it YA sci fi just makes the mistake worse. I think they said YA because Daniel, the main character, is a teenager for most of the book. But he has the insight, problem-solving skills and world view of a 40 year old man so it doesn't make sense to me to limit the audience to YA readers.

And this is not a sci fi book. I think Amazon would have a Kindle best seller if they positioned it as a novel in the tradition of Dan Brown's "The DaVinci Code". If you are reading this Mr. Farr, please don't be insulted. You are a much, much better writer and have filled your book with accurate ancient history rather than half-baked goofy ideas. BUT, "The DaVinci Code" was a huge best-seller and made a ton of money. So if you are reading this review, please show it to your Amazon editor. And if someone at Amazon is reading this review, please consider my suggestion and thank you for finally putting a good book in the Kindle First program.

Any reader who enjoys adventure along with learning interesting things about ancient civilizations should enjoy this book. At one point I said to myself that I couldn't believe Daniel could get into any more threatening situations, but then he did.

A few reviewers have mentioned that very religious people might have an issue with the book. I guess that's possible. But "The DaVinci Code" said terrible things about Catholics and it was a best-seller and a profitable movie.

Huh? Sci-fi, no. Mystery, kinda. Action, yes. But it doesn't make sense.

This book was easily readable and I found the premise interesting. However, I had several problems.

First, I found the characters and situations preposterous or totally flat. The protagonist is Daniel, a teenage boy born to two geniuses. Dad speaks many languages and is a professor and minor celebrity. Mom used her gifts to make a boatload of money, sell the company, and home school her "average" son. This average kid cooks, extreme rock climbs, flies helicopters, scuba dives, knows karate - and all like a pro. It helps that Mom's idea of home school is to gallivant around the world, but it still stretches the imagination to the breaking point. And of course each of these skills is used to save the day at the very last moment. I found his relationship with both parents to be cliched. Of course he has daddy issues, it's that kind of book. Of course all his friends are geniuses of one sort or another. You would think that the insecurity being "average" around all these incredibly smart people might lead to some tension, but you would be wrong. His love interest is a card board cut out. His best friend is interesting, but not given enough space to really grow. His other friends are non- existent. The villain (if that's what you call him) is flat. His dad is flat. His sister is flat. The only one with any depth is Daniel and as we see, that's mostly in skills. The situations are seriously improbable and also cliched. This guy has answers! So guess what happens. The timeline of the book is hard to figure out as well. It feels like he just got home when suddenly he's off racing around the world with his best friend who was JUST released from the hospital with life threatening injuries. Does the book cover a few weeks? A few months? No idea.

Second, where was the sci-fi? I read a ton of sci-fi and in good sci-fi the world is skewed enough that it highlights the more human questions. Good sci-fi isn't always about the aliens or tech, it's about the people. But the sci-fi is there, it is always the stage that sets up the other drama. The question of what the disks are, who the Architects are, and what they are up to are asked frequently in the book, but no answers are given. I know this is the start of a series, and perhaps the author thought leaving the basic outline to another book is a good way to get return readers. I think basic outlines belong in the first book personally. Maybe he wanted more mystery. But to me, in a good serial mystery the mystery gets gradually deeper. One answered question gives birth to two new questions. Not answering the questions doesn't intrigue me, it annoys me and makes me wonder what was accomplished other than running around. And it certainly didn't set any stage or shape a world. It was only the very weak impetus to action.

Third was the ending. It just didn't work for me. I didn't like following one character through the whole book, only to have that voice replaced by another character that was still very one dimensional. It seems like society has crumbled and people have taken to the hills, but no explanation for this is given. But they could just be camping too.

The other thing that grated on me is the constant scorn that is heaped on anyone of any faith. Not just Christians, but Jews, Muslims, Hindus, even the new religion of the book. The author clearly has no use for such people. People of faith are stupid cows that believe in magic. The author grudgingly tries to be fair by making the mother go around randomly to various religious ceremonies, but just for the ceremony, and it really doesn't help.

All in all, I won't recommend this book and probably won't read this author again.
