Insightful study of heroic quests in cinema

You’ll be surprised by how many celebrated films are driven by a hero or heroine’s quest to overcome daunting obstacles and fulfill their destinies as complete individuals. Maria Garcia finds intriguing and unexpected connections between a wildly diverse group of films, ranging in genre from screwball comedy to westerns, from fairy tales to thrillers, even baseball movies! Her chapter on The Silence of the Lambs brilliantly uncovers and dissects the myriad symbols and motifs in that popular suspense film and will have you eager to watch it again for its carefully layered subtext. In all, this is an insightful, fresh examination of centuries-old archetypes and the crucial role they play in so much of our movie entertainment.

Good writing, solid research.

“Cinematic Quests for Identity” is a scholarly book (it has footnotes and a bibliography), but it is written in the style of long-form journalism, of the kind you read in The New Yorker. I think students and professors of film and literature will want to read it. The author’s expertise is in film, but she spends a lot of time talking about how the conventions of quest films are based on epic poems such as Chrétien de Troyes’s “Perceval,” and on Greek mythology. I like that Garcia writes about the female quest as different from the male quest and the child’s quest. Also, she is a feminist writer, so when she discusses Greek myths, or Darwinian theory, she has a completely different take on these stories. I just wish it were in Italian!
