A little weird in parts, but a good introduction to the mechanics and spirit of the sport

I am not a knife-throwing expert, and have never thrown an ax. However, I have always liked target sports: archery, small caliber guns, skeet and knife throwing. This book gives clear instructions, with helpful pictures, and a lot of encouragement. Although the book is short, it also covers why people like to throw sharp things and gives some details about competitions.
I detect some survivalist ethos, especially early in the book. For example, the author recommends saving money by finding old strips of metal and sharpening them yourself or taking them to a shoe repairer. I live in Manhattan, and if I scoured the street trash for a suitable piece of metal, say from discarded bed springs, and brought it to my local shoe repair shop asking them to turn it into a lethal weapon, I would expect a visit from Homeland Security. I would have trouble explaining why I did all this to save the $2 or $3 a cheap throwing knife costs. Also, I don't mind the cost of a good knife, and some of the pleasure of the sport is handling a well-made knife.
Another example is the advice to get a section of a tree trunk to use as a target, I think you're supposed to chop it yourself. That may work where the author lives, but I wouldn't try it in Central Park. I get by with bales of hay, or soaked plywood, or commercial targets.
Anyway, there's only a little of the eccentric stuff, and it adds some color to the book. I recommend the book to anyone interested in having a little fun hearing metal make a satisfying thunk into wood, hopefully near the center of the target.

Nicely done book that is very well illustrated. Super for the novice thrower and great information on military throwing. A good addition to any knife-throwing library.
